I’m looking at buying a new spotting scope and was looking at a Ziess Coquest Gavia ...anyone have one or spent any time looking through one ? What’s a good spotting scope in the $1500 +- range for glassing big country and canyons? Would love a Swaro but not right now.

I have a Gavia, this will be my third season with it. I really like the spotter.

I’ve had it side by side with a Leica Televid 82mm and the one thing that i noticed is the Televid had better clarity during low light hours but it wasn’t enough of a deal breaker to run out and upgrade spotting scopes because of it. During the daylight hours they both were very comparable.

You best bet is to get a used Zeiss Diascope. I had mine for 20 years and the only reason I sold it was to complete my Swarovski ATX/BTX system and help out a buddy. They don’t really wear out and I could still read the newspaper with mine at 100 yards. I’d take old Diascope over a new Conquest anytime.

I’ve got the Zeiss Victory Harpia but very happy with the glass quality. I’m sure the Gavia would also be well built, it’s a Zeiss.

I know there's a lot more Meopta S2 fans, like myself, on this site. In my opinion, the S2 is your best bet for the price range you mentioned, hands down. There's one in the classifieds right now for $1650. It is a proven spotter and right up there close to alpha glass.

If you can, round up some spotters for comparison and see for yourself. That's how I came to the conclusion. What impressed me the most with the S2 during the comparison besides the image was the eye relief and also the fact that on high power it was actually usable.
