I got a cheap 410 imported by Remington from Baikal. Cut off the stock to about 11.5 and put a slip over recoil pad on it. Its lop is shorter than the 2 youth 20ga we own and lighter. My 7 year old shoots it. He is afraid of the 20 and they are heavier.

Stevens .410 is deadly on turkeys out to 40 with tss.
Factory stock is long for kids so I cut mine down.

I got a mossberg 510 mini in 410 for my oldest son when he was 6. It's not as hard to find shells for as people think, just look on AmmoSeek. Tons of grouse, chukars, Hunt, rabbits and turkeys later....I don't regret it a bit. The recoil is just about right, a 20 gauge smacks kids pretty hard in a platform small enough to shoot.

Did you have to cut the youth model stock down? Or one of the turkey models?

@digger what makes a 410 an expert gun?

Tiny amount of payload.

The 28 and .410 have been known as expert guns because they use very light loads, requiring tighter patterns to produce enough density for application. Lot of times it will frustrate a kid.

TSS changes the ball game with them, but for actual wing shooting, I'd go with a gas semi 20 over a single shot .410.

Funny, I've been kicking the tires on a gun for our boys as well. Wandered down the 410 rabbit hole and have come back around to a youth 20 of some variety since I reload for it.

Since I load for the 20, I have lighter recoiling recipes for both lead and tss that work just fine out to 25-30 yds (35+ for tss) making the choice pretty easy really. Although if reloading components for the 410 were more readily available I might be down that road instead.

Currently considering the Winchester sxp, Mossberg 5xx, or possibly one of the better Turkish semi's depending on budget.

410 with TSS is a fantastic combo and certainly not just an "expert" gun. Killed 3 birds with it last season and buddy killed 2, one of which was 50yds stone dead.

Find the right choke and it throws a phenomenal pattern. Mine is set up with Rogue 9.5 and Jebbs full. I recommend a red dot as it's tight at 20 for sure.
