Your top gear items for 2024 (limited to 3)

This year on my goat hunt I used a bsr 3000 stove that worked great, a bit slower than my BIL’s pocket rocket but not by enough to matter. Boiled water in minutes and packs down stupid small. Also lighter than the pocket rocket.

Also ran a new mystery ranch Metcalf 75 that outperformed my other packs by a long shot. Had an old alps frame pack and a pop up 38 that were way less comfortable with the weight than my Metcalf. Not to mention this bag fits more gear and has more adjustments to tailor the fit to me. Got it on sale for a deal I couldn’t pass up and glad I bought it!

Lastly, my BIL had a soft water bottle with filter that was amazing. Faster that boiling and ready to drink immediately. Still boiled the still water but any moving water was great. Filled our bladder and water bottles in 5 mins from a stream running down the mountain on our goat hunt.

Runner up would be the sleeping pad I bought off Amazon, gear doctor brand reg size it was like 80$ CAD and was much better and waaay lighter than my old pad. A big upgrade for sure!!

Crispi Lapponia III GTX - I've been on a quest for the right hunting boot for several years now. I'm not ready to say the Lapponia is "the one", but it's the best boot I've worn in quite some time. Light and comfortable.

Hardside Hydration Swig Rig - Lots of pros to this hydration system, but if the only pro was being able to throw my Nalgene in the dishwasher as opposed to washing out a water bladder, that would be enough.

Mammoth Headwear Hats - After years of cramming a hat on my head as the very last nub on the strap holds on for dear life, I finally found a hat that fits my giant dome. And it comes in blaze orange! My head was more comfortable than it's been in years.

Not all new items for this year, but most of my hunts this year were very glassing intensive. Was able to take my PB bull, whitetail, and a very nice mulie this year.

1. Razor UHD 18x56 Binos. Spent so many hours behind these watching bucks and bulls.

2. Slik 624. I have two. One with a VA-5 and one with the Tricer LP. Glass and shoot off them.

3. Sig Kilo 5K. Used the ON-X pin drop feature to stalk a Mulie with my bow and find a long-range across Canyon whitetail I shot. Would've been tough to find in the tall brush once I got over there, but walked right to it.

Some more of the same stuff as others mentioned:

1) Garmin Xero Chrono - just makes things so easy, captures all shots quickly and easily.

2) Sitka Ambient 1/4 zip Hoody - the original one, great piece, works well with all of my gear

3) Western Mountaineering Terralite - I am a side sleeper and now have room to do so!

*Also moved all optics, rifles and tripods to ARCA so everything is cross compatible.

1. NL Pure 12x42s. - A real jack of all trades binoc. Owned various awards and these are my favorite.

2. WM Antelope - awesome 0* sleeping bag. Got it with overfill and it is unbelievably warm for the weight.

3. Analogue pocket - I’m a 80s baby, and grew up with GameBoy games. It’s nice to have something to do when I crawl into the tent at 6:45pm when winter camping where fires are prohibited.

This year I did quite a bit more road hunting and lease hunting than anything else, and invested heavily into some new gear.

• RRS TFCT 33 - For road hunts and NRL and the like where weight isn’t a big deal, it is magic. Ridiculously stable. I might even eat the weight and take it on backpacking hunts because it’s THAT good.
• Vector X 10x42 Rangefinding Binos - I’ve put these through the paces and worked them hard, they might be the best range finding binos on the market. The glass is Alpha level and they’re super quick pulling range. I also love the the HUD display. My only gripe is that I wish I could use 4DOF rather than AB ballistics.
• Eberlestock Upranger Backpack - I picked this up and used it for everything from whitetail hunts to matches. They did a great job with the organizing panels and the wings. I also added some OBI Links to the pack and my rifles and gosh… it just works really well.

Honorable mention goes to 147 ELDM and 77 TMK bullets. Everything I shot this year hated them.
