cliff note version- barrel shortened to 19" (from 22"), titanium bolt (purchased from a guy that sells a few different varieties on 24 hour campfire), but the biggest reduction is removing about a 1/2 lb of "gel" from the stock

Just need to get an elk hunt done. One slated for 2024. 10.6lbs but not a sheep gun and I wanted a little weight (9lb was target but S3 added a #). No scope, arca rail or picatinny rail it’s still ~7lbs. S

With the really light guns how durable are they? I felt the stock of a very light Christensen and it felt paper thin - like a drop or whack on a rock could crack it. Seemed potato chip thin but crazy light.

Most are carbon fiber or kevlar. You'd be hard pressed to break one.

My elk rifle is my all around big game rifle in a 270 Winchester. It has worked great on elk, bear, wolf, antelope, whitetail, and mule deer. Use a good bullet and take good shots.

What bullets do you use for the 25-06. Ever wish you had more bullet fpr elk? Trying to decide on my next gun, 95% smaller bodied deer with the posibility of hunting elk later. I really like what the 25-06 looks like for deer, was wondering how it performed on elk.

I’ve not killed an elk with my .25-06 yet. However, there are many folks on here that have killed them with various .25 calibers including the .257 Roberts, .257 Weatherby, .25-284, .25 Creed, .25 SST, and .25-06AI. The .25-06 lands in between the .243/6mm and 6.5 in terms of recoil with typically higher MV. For factory ammunition, the following .25-06 loads provide good performance on antelope, deer, black bear, and elk . The key item to understand is minimum terminal velocity for bullet expansion for each and to plan your shots accordingly.

Traditionally the .25-06 is hamstrung by factory rifles with slow twist rates that don’t stabilize high BC bullets. Typical twist is 1:10 and it’s good for bullets up to 120. To shoot the heavier high BC 133-135 grain bullets you need a twist rate of 1:7-1:8, and this will require a semi-custom build. However, there have been a lot of big game animals killed by the .25-06 with bullets from 100-120.

If you're looking for a cartridge with the least amount of recoil that still has plenty of umph for small deer up to elk, and legal in most western states, take a close look at the 6mm Creed. Its performance is very similar to the .243 and either will get the job done. However, in factory ammunition, the 6 Creed takes greater advantage of the highest BC bullets.
