Your Elk Hunting Rifle

Great thread. In the market for a western hunting rifle. It'll be my first upgrade from a .270 used for whitetail hunting. Thinking I'll end up with 7mm rem mag over the .300 win mag, but all these responses are making that decision a bit more difficult!
your .270 should work just fine for elk. my brothers and i have killed dozens throughout the years with a .270

My backup is a Browning X-Bolt Long Range in 30-06, 24" barrel, a combination I don't believe they sell anymore (I got mine in 2016). This thing is long as heck and I also have a muzzle brake on it for another inch. It's also super heavy, forget about shooting it off-hand. But I wanted a go-to that I could own forever, shoot anything, and still find ammo for, and 30-06 was an obvious choice for an heirloom-category rifle.
I have a X-Bolt HC Speed in 30-06 for the same reason you state. Mine is boringly accurate and will last forever. 180gr TSX kills 'em plenty dead.

I still use my trusty 30-06 I bought when I turned 18. I’ve been thinking a lot about building a 7mm prc lately though…

This is good to know too! It's probably better to hunt with what I have so I can invest in other things that will get me out in the field to see if I can even find any elk first, ha!
That is a very wise idea. And after your first hunt you’ll have a lot better idea of what those things might be

Kimber hunter .308. I do think I’ll end up selling it for
a 300WSM though

16.5" marlin 45-70. ghost ring sights 405gr hard casts @1660fps. Have used this to kill over 60% of my elk. 20" custom mauser in .308, 25" custom mauser in 300wm, and a phenomenally accurate Midland based on a 1903 action in 30-06 are my other elk killers. Wife and kids use a couple o 243s and a mod 7 in 7-08 to kill just about everything elk included. I dont have to travel more than .5 miles to kill elk every year though so my choises might vary from you guys who drive across country for a week hunt.

9.3x62 Sako 75, cut to 21” with 1-6 power accupoint. Gives comfort in bear country (did let loose on a charging black bear this year).
Just built a tikka 7prc for open country moose/elk, but I haven’t dialed it in yet.
