You like your truck camper shell for Hunting?

After having one I can’t go without one which is why I searched for months to find one for my 2006 Tundra. I built my own drawer system with a bed to sleep on. It works fantastic. I haven’t found any real restrictions over having no drawers. I can store a ton in my drawers and access is easy with a 6’ table folded on one side (upside down to slide on carpet and pull out to access things towards the back) and a ice fishing sled on the left side (pull out to access things in the back and to haul gas cans or spill risk containers). I bought a foldable mattress topper that also works great and is comfortable. My wife rated it at a 8/10 for comfort. So far no down sides. I have a utility trailer if I need to haul items that won’t fit under the cap.

I also bought a tent that attaches to the truck and disconnects in seconds and reconnects in minutes so I can leave it standing and drive the truck when needed.

Love mine.

Has a full bed rug, adds a little padding to the floor. I camp in it quite a bit. Used a generator and a little heater for rifle deer, I think the high for the weekend was 10.

Room for two, probably best if it's a wife or girlfriend it gets a little tight with all the gear.

All I have is a shelf covered in outdoor carpet. It is level with the side windows so you can load smaller things through them and they ride on the self.

Down the road I'd like to make a raised platform for my sleeping pad and have a little storage under it.


Oh and a 6.5ft bed helps.

I have a carpeted snugtop for my 08 short bed Silverado and I love it. I built the frame for my bed tall enough to slide plastic totes underneath. For the windows I used some bubble wrap type insulation from Home Depot (don’t remember the name) and covered it with a black roll of fabric from hobby lobby. It just velcros to the carpet. I’m not crazy about the Velcro, but it’s been getting the job done for 4yrs now. I thought I may freeze my ass off back there but I think I’ve slept in it in the high teens and I’ve never been cold in that bed. The insulation seems to help hold some heat but more importantly it keeps tweakers from being able to see inside.

I couldn’t go without one now having had one for a few years. First on a Tacoma and then now on my Canyon. On the newest one I got the side windoors and they are fantastic for accessing the bed. Also makes a good spot for racks to ride

It is made by Rightline Gear. They make different models but this is the only one that connects and allows you to drive the vehicle away and reconnect when you return. I have only used it on one trip so far but the last night it rained over 2 inches. I didn’t have a drip of water in my set up but my Buddy and his wife had a few inches of water inside their cheap standard tent.

It is called an SUV Tent but it fit my Tundra perfectly.

I had one on my last truck that I traded in 2 years ago, and this thread made me miss having one. I ordered an ARE Overland with windoors today. Sometimes I wish I never heard of this site!

I'd recommend, if your garage door is tall enough to have a high rise topper go that route if you get one. Measure the overall height of the truck with the taller topper on it or you may be upset when you get home. Ask me how I know

I put a diamondback lid on my ranger thinking I'd get a roof top tent. For the price I could find a used camper after looking at RTTs'
I've got a love hate with the DB lid. It is as secure as you can get. It would take a pry bar to get in my bed. The build is super, does not leak unless you really try, even in a car wash I might get a few drops.
Price is about half of a topper and sometimes I wish that route. On the 5 foot bed, I can't haul anything tall obviously with out taking it off.

I am getting 20-30 nights a year in mine easily and it is well worth it.,..but sucks dust in and pita to take on and off. I just did an mx hauler for the bike.

Depending on how flexible and skinny you are can do a top rack for sleeping and bottom rack for coolers. Use it for stealth camping regularly when I am skiing or doing early morning / late night flights and don't want to do 3hrs of driving after landing at midnight.

I have one for my tacoma buts it's a 5 foot bed so I use a tent over the back. If it's wet I take a pop up canopy for extra dry area to stand up and get dressed. But I love my Leer canopy have one on every truck I have owned.

I really like my topper… I would get one with slide window in front if possible… so you can send AC from truck cab to truck shell for dogs etc. I also like it for moving canoe..

I love my topper, and cannot see myself ever having a truck without one. I have never slept in it, but use it for stacking gear and keeping it (relatively) secure on trips. My current shell has the flip out windows, and those are awesome. I am 6'3 which helps with reaching inside the side windows. The side windows limit the crawling inside the back for gear. I have a 2019 Ram which was a new body style that year. I looked for nearly a year, but eventually found and bought mine used, and believe I paid $400.

I have same truck, which topper you go with? Any pictures?

Soft topper. Mines about a year old. I haven’t washed the truck since fall. It’s got sone dust on it. But, it is waterproof. And, it makes for a great place to sleep too.

They aren’t as lock tight as a hard cover. But, they serve the exact same purposes just as well. And, I LOVE that after installation of the rails, I can run it up or strapped forward for a full bed. In a minute or so.

Best thing I’ve ever done. I use my setup a ton. Have slept in it 60+ nights the past two seasons. When I’m not sleeping I fold the mattress up and stow it up against the back of the bed. I generally keep a jet sled in there with gear as well. The side board on the driver side is my bow/gun locker I can access from flip up window. I have LED lights for the topper window and the side window as well.

Someone mentioned the RSI Smartcap. I waited six months for one with no signs delivery was imminent. Had a lot of time to do additional research, and it made flipping to the ARE HD a pretty easy choice.
