It was 7 degrees this morning. 60 mph winds over the weekend. Blew brand new shingles off my buddies shop. Grizzly bears stole half my elk 2 weeks ago. Some kind of predator came around the house and stole my mule deer head off the back porch last weekend. Its a brutal place.

There is a lot of change coming to Kemmerer. Looks like HornPorn is learning that Wyoming is not home to the friendliest folks. But they do exist out there. Anyplace in the state could fit your needs. You will find that the most desirable places are expensive and it is easy to see why they are so desirable once you have been across the state.
A few tips... the state is warmest in the northern half and colder in the southern half (for the most part). The Wyoming draw is complete BS, but you do get a general deer and elk. These are great tags to have, but you may be driving a long way to take full advantage. We have an ever increasing demographic coming here that are like Ned Flanders from the Simpsons. Self righteous bible bashers seeking their homesteading dream with their load of unvaxed crotch goblins in tow. Come to Wyoming if you like Wyoming, too many people are moving here wanting to change it into their utopia... that won't go over well. If you embrace it and like it the way it is, you will have no problem finding friendly folks.

That's like SD too. So many big city yuppies want to move here. They all try to buy up land so they can hunt. Well that old farmer who let lots of people hunt, deer, ducks, pheasants etc now sells out. Big city Joe now closes land and only lets his kids hunt. I hate the way things are turning. I'm glad im on the downside of my outdoor life. My grandkids...if ever have any....won't have it good.

Good luck OP and i hope you find some non-windy places in WY. My experience is most places on the high plains are nothing but wind.

We have similar mindsets, would like to have folks thinking like you as a neighbor, and we'll be heading to north ID or western MT.

Interesting take. Up to this point I was getting the feeling that if you used the internet or asked questions you didn't have the balls to...checks notes...live somewhere with inclement weather.

Let me help you out.....

Lived in Western WY for 6 years and worked at a mine on the Idaho border. My wife and I are both from over the hill 45 minutes away on the ID side. You will be an outsider and possibly never accepted into the fold if you didn't grow up/go to high school with everyone. 80% Mormon folks, very nice neighbors, but like I say you'll always be an outsider. People may be friendly with you when you see them around town but when they get around the native crowd they poke fun at you. If your OK with that, then read on.

Best hunting I've seen. I have lived in ID/WY/MT and Western WY has excellent general season hunting for mule deer, elk and black bear. Sure it's not the 90's anymore but it's still good and better than most general season areas, especially if you have horses like we do. Very horse friendly place to hunt, unlike where I live now in MT where its solid timber. You can go on a general elk tag which is any elk and go out on public land and see elk every time you go out. Not kill one but at least see elk. You can not do that in ID/MT at least I have never been able to.

As far as your requirements on what you are looking for I can think of a decent amount of places fitting that bill. I had one as well, 40 acres with a creek bordering BLM outside a very small town in SW WY. Cost me 95,000 in 2018. Times have changed like everywhere else and not changed for the better either. Transplants are ruining the last 3 great states we have ID/WY/MT. People move there "and they are just like us". But let's be honest that is just bullshit they aint.

Yup, lived for 25 years in Wyoming on the border of Idaho. Everything said about the Mormons is true. Winters are RRRREAL long and there was just 1 road in and out of the valley. Realestate went stupid high in price after the valley was discovered by the Californification crowd. I did share in the times when hunting was very good. Not so nowdays according to the folks I still keep communication with. Hate to say it but I believe the United States is over caring capacity for a person to enjoy the life you describe and hope to have. Saying that I'll bet anywhere in Wyoming is better than where you're at in the East. I understand.

I used to live in Lander and it was pretty mild for WY. I think it's a town you should check out. Where I live in CO is 5x worse in winter.

Funny, I know people in a good number of states from WI, MN, both Dakotas, Iowa, MT, WY, ID, etc. People complain about their neighbors and talk politics similar in every place. It is all who you associate yourself with and carry yourself.

Some of the most petty drawn out feuds are between ranch families that go far enough back the current family that owns it doesn't really know why they and their neighbors don't get along...but its just the way it is.

I will agree with the moving in and changing it aspect. It doesn't just effect the locals either. Places that people would visit to get away from people and B.S. turned into all people and B.S.
