I've searched and haven't been able to find the specifics on the non-resident requirement of having a resident with you while in wilderness areas. My question is in what aspect does the resident need to be with you. Is it in camp with you, right next to you, within shouting distance, etc. All I can find is what is published on the Wyoming Fish and Game site:

Nonresident big and trophy game hunters must obtain a professional outfitter or resident guide while hunting in any federally designated wilderness area. The Wyoming Board of Outfitters and Professional Guides must license all outfitters.

  • A resident guide license may be obtained from the Wyoming Game and Fish Departent by any resident possessing a valid big or trophy game license. A resident guide may only take up to two nonresidents in a wilderness area per year, provided they do not accept any gratuity or compensation.

They have to be by your side at all times.

That does not appear to be required according to the information in the link that Indian Summer posted.

"(b) Any resident possessing a valid resident big or trophygame animal license may apply for and receive a resident guidelicense. The resident guide license shall be issued withoutcharge or bond by the commission, any district supervisor orresident game warden upon receipt of an affidavit from theresident stating the names and addresses of the nonresidenthunters to be guided, the game to be hunted, the area to behunted, and that the resident has not received nor will acceptdirectly or indirectly any compensation for his services as aguide. A resident guide shall not guide more than two (2)nonresident hunters in any calendar year on any national forest, wilderness area, national game refuge, or national park, exceptas provided in W.S. 23-2-401, nor shall he accept anycompensation or gratuity for his services. An exchange of guideservices shall not be considered compensation for the purposesof this section. The name and license number of the nonresidenthunter shall be placed on the back of"

Is there someplace else that states proximity requirements? I searched the Wyoming Game and Fish website and did not find any different information.

I'd be inclined to ask them to show me in state code where it says that. I generally support the fish and game and their officers but I've seen them make things up or pass along hearsay from time to time.

If a professional outfitter can send a client on a solo hike up one drainage while he takes another client up a different drainage (i,e. leaving one unaccompanied for the day) then it seems that the Resident Guide could do the same.

I don't care enough to ask. I get the lisence for close friends and family. We are hunting together in dense grizzly country and there is no need to split up, and it's out of the question to shoot more than one animal at a time.

But by all means if someone is told otherwise or it can be clarified it would be good information for this thread.

WY Game and Fish doesn't regulate guides and outfitters. Call the outfitter board and ask for the definition of "guide" and "accompany".

It's defined in the text of the link from #4. It appears there is no definition in the WY codes for
"accompanying", so one would revert to the standard definition.

"a) No nonresident shall hunt big or trophy game animals
on any designated wilderness area, as defined by federal or
state law, in this state unless accompanied by a licensed
professional guide or a resident guide. There shall be at least
one (1) licensed professional guide or resident guide
accompanying each two (2) nonresident hunters.
The commission
may also specify other areas of the state, or specific big or
trophy game species, for which a licensed professional or
resident guide is required for nonresidents, for purposes of
proper game management, protection of hunter welfare and safety,
or better enforcement of game and fish laws. The commission may
allow licensed guides to accompany more than two (2) hunters but
no more than six (6) hunters in specific areas."

Sounds like you've been through the process before so I'll believe you. Want to hunt unit 51 this year @grfox92 with two non residents lol
I'll be busy with my own hunting. Feel free to send me a PM. Also go back and edit the unit number out of your post....
