Wyoming Thorofare Elk Questions

Im in with Yellowstone for the archery hunt starting Monday. My first and likely last outfitted hunt of this type.

Really looking forward to this one. I’m five elk seasons, a dozen bulls in bow range, 4 missed shots(the same bull), and one 5x5 bull on the meat pole. All OTC public land. But I feel like some time spent with professionals will help me connect the very scattered dots I’ve rounded up the last several years.


Any advice for a lone wolf type public land going on one of these hunts?

last year most their booked clients didnt draw, and they had weeks open and pulled camp early. Always worth a call to anyone who is wanting to put their name on a list for earlier than 5 years. Good luck with your hunt when it happens!

I asked to be bumped up if available, wish they would have called. I have 6 or 7 points now booked for next year.

Point being, if they were seriously underbooked for the year I wish they would have moved me up.

I would guess they were nervous of having too many customers draw and being conservative due to the change in tag allotment and no historical draw odds to project peoples odds with?

Yeah the guy I have spoke with seems to be a bit behind the curve with the points game.

I'd be more unhappy if they stuffed extra guys in camp with me because they missed the other direction.

Folks who have been in these hunts. On a typical morning do you ride out with just your guide and another hunter (2x1) and go somewhere while another guide takes 2 hunters in a different direction, etc. Or does everyone ride together to the same general area and then just spread out a little bit and wait for elk to come through? Curious what the actual hunt is like

I can't speak specifically for these outfitters, but generally is going to vary. Where I used to guide, we would sometimes send multiple guides and outfitters to the same general area depending on how the elk were moving, or send everyone in different directions. We generally would try to cover all the country we would normally hunt, but there were the hotspots that often had elk movement with migration patterns where we would send larger groups of hunters.

I have seen it both ways but the better hunts is where each guide takes his hunter in their own direction and there are plenty animals for all.
I have also been on a migration type hunt where everyone killed their bull from pretty much the same overlook during the course of the week. Harvest was good but the experience left some to be desired.
