Wyoming Elk General Vs Limited

Hey All,

Starting to get to the point where I may consider using my elk NR points while I save my deer points in hopes G/H rebound.

Looks like I can draw most any general and some limited. But there are plenty of other limited tags that take more points.

Anyone willing to share their experience on Wyomings general tags vs their lower preference point limited tags? Not asking you to use the unit #s unless you want to.

In general (no pun intended) - general units will see more pressure. So that’s what limited tag helps out with.

Are you going for any decent bull?

Limited tag might give you better date selection if your points coincide also.

Limited will be one small slice of the pie for hunt area, whereas general tag will provide you with greater selection of country type to hunt (elevation / private / public / BLM).

I’d figure out your dates and type of land you prefer first, and then go from there.

We do great in general units. In my experience if you find a limited quota license that is easier to draw there will be a reason. Sometimes the unit is 90% private with very limited public land. Do your homework. Nothing wrong with general units though. I killed 11 elk in a row in general units.

You must be in the 10 points range. I would consider this to be no-mans-land.

Most of the low entry limiteds are not very good, or are heavily private, or worse have shit access.

You might upgrade your odds by doing the Special and seeing how that goes. There are some hunts in good units in the special that will have dropped points requirements by 2 years.

Archery or rifle?

Keep an eye on if your limited draw elk unit is a general deer unit during the same hunt dates. That happened to me one year and I ran into so many deer hunters that I thought I was hunting a general elk unit.

I have 6 NE elk points. So just getting to no man’s lands (same thing going on with my Colorado elk points which I have 5 of lol)

Like everyone else, I’d like a decent bull lol

But I’ve got 340 and 320 bulls and a few rags horns in UT on general OTC tags. But I’m hunting the thick nasty pines, not much fun to still hunt that

Ideally I’d just like to be able to hunt a bull tag how I do with mule deer. Glassing, judging, and then getting into range. Not too caught up on size. Don’t have much interest in paying out of state fees to go hunt thick pines, I can do that in my home state lol

Heavily lean toward rifle. I’m a want to be bow hunter at best. Good to know about the general deer timing, that could make for a tough limited hunt if there’s a lot of people looking for deer

How many Points do you have? If you're in the single digit range, I'd say go General. In the 10-13 range I'd do some serious research and see what's possible to draw in the Regular. If you're highly motivated and have $ consider the Special draw (I'm sure Wyo will accept you're hefty donation if you draw). Double digits points you can also share your points with a well vetted serious hard hunting buddy and go General. You've got some options depending on your goals and timeline. Remember, point creep ain't gonna disappear.
