Wyoming Elk 2026 - Will 6 points guarantee a west region general tag?

There has to be a middle ground.
Not sure if you are aware, but the 200,000 non residents that hold elk preference points is more than 1/3 of the entire population of the state. There are only about 50,000 residents that hunt elk. They should have a tag every year and honestly I am surprised they haven't gone to 90/10 for the limited quota tags. Giving non-residents 16% of those tags is generous and I for one am thankful.

I'm one that really doesn't like to see artificial barriers put up so the "other guy" doesn't get a tag, while I keep mine. As well as "we need to make it hard for people" while spoon feeding our kids and friends the info.
Agree completely. I really hope the price to hunt doesn't get so high it becomes a rich man's game.

I think they could manage the creep if they wanted to.

Make people apply and front the money in order to gain points.

When Colorado removed the requirement to front your tag money, applications increased dramatically.

Make points expensive and the barrier to entry will slow some people down. Unfortunately, that's not in their interest because selling points is essentially free money for them.
That might work, so basically not allow a points only period. Force people To apply for a tag to get a point, I don’t hate it. Hell with the way Wyoming holds money for 4-5 months they may go for that🤣.

please see the prior comments where I said non residents SHOULD get a tag every year, and SHOULD get the majority of the tags in the state. I have no bone to pick with residents, jealous of the ease in which they receive a tag, sure but I have no issue with them.
I just wish there was a way to curb the point creep, yes I know the creeping the general tag has absolutely zero to do with residents.
Maybe force non residents to apply to receive a point, i personally know 5-6 guys that would immediately stop building points of that were the case

I agree! It’s already crazy expensive, I don’t think you fix it by raising costs, if you do the rich man wins every time. Maybe do like montana, if you don’t apply you purge your points(For the general tag).

Aside from a legit economic crash that prevents people from traveling distance optionally to recreate there's no fix for point creep or Elk opportunities. The population growth in general is insane and snowballing out of control. Blaming various states for tag allocations or NR vs R tags is just folly, they're doing the best they can with what they've got and yes it's getting worse but they can't just magically make more Elk. Maybe the states can use helos to wipe out wolves or something?

Anyhow I'm no pro but I think 6 points will get you a West tag.
