Wyoming Elk 2026 - Will 6 points guarantee a west region general tag?

Do you mean Non-Residents? Residents don't have a point system for elk.

Maybe insane until you compare to what other states are doing. Wyoming is generous in their tag allotment to non-residents. Guessing that won't last forever and 12 years will look attractive compared to what it will be in the future.

Sure, they could price people out to lessen the wait for the rich guys but that is hopefully a strategy they don't ever go to.
Like who? Colorado? Montana? They both offer significantly more opportunities outside of any otc, I can draw dozens of units in Colorado with 2-4pts.
Montana general is 3or under on points. I assume your referening
Nevada, Utah, maybe New Mexico. Outside of Utah think there force residents to draw a tag, kinda of a novel idea. Again I’m not saying residents should have to draw a general tag, I am saying that I shouldn’t have to wait 7-12yrs to draw a general tag when a resident buys one every year at the gas station. There has to be a middle ground.

Are you suggesting giving out more tags? Lowering resident tags? Raising costs to price some people out? How do you fix the high demand vs low supply available?

I don’t know what the fix is, I know lowering the non resident tags by 35% didn’t help.

The question posed was “Do we think 6 points will guarantee the tag again in 2026”?

Yes or No

The application deadline has passed.

Again if I’m wrong, I’ll gladly admit it. I can only go on what I’ve read.

7,250 was the statutory NR cap on ALL Full Price NR Elk licenses, not the GEN license quota.
NR were were allocated 16% of the state quota, the difference between that 16% and 7,250 was the GEN license portion. After the initial draw, unallocated LQ licenses from that 16%, were converted the GEN licenses and reissued to Special draw Gen license applicants, continuing where the initial draw left off.

NR Gen licenses were increased when the dept went to NR Elk Regions. This increase is the instigator for residents moving towards a 90/10 res/nr split.

Well that thank you the clarification! That makes a lot more sense. I

I honestly don’t know how to fix the creep, probably can’t be fixed. Truly sucks for non residents, I love the west and everything it has to offer. Getting tags to chase elk every September is extremely high on my priority list and if the creep gets to a point where I cannot hunt elk every year somewhere. I’ll have to make the decision to move to a state with a otc general resident tag. The wife and I have talked a lot about moving to one of the red states with otc resident tags for quite a few years, maybe when my daughter graduates high school.
Hell then I can say…dam non residents always complaining 🤣

I think they could manage the creep if they wanted to.

Make people apply and front the money in order to gain points.

When Colorado removed the requirement to front your tag money, applications increased dramatically.

Make points expensive and the barrier to entry will slow some people down. Unfortunately, that's not in their interest because selling points is essentially free money for them.

You can absolutely hunt elk every year in Wyoming, on a guaranteed tag, on public land. You just can't get a bull tag every year unless you have enough money to buy auction tags.
