Wyoming antelope draw

I absolutely blame the draw. Lower numbers have reduced available tags, but those should then be shared fairly with the residents of the state, which they are not.

I don't apply in random draw states, but, you guys get 80% of the licenses. A 20 second look at the odds shows you could be hunting Pronghorn this year and Stevie Wonder could fill the tag.

Residents have 67 units with 25% odds, 48 units with better than 50% odds, and 28 units with 100% odds of drawing. If you aren’t getting tags it’s not because you can’t. No you can’t draw the best units in the state but if you want to hunt the opportunity is there. As a nonresident I’d trade my points any day of the week for wy resident opportunity.

I’m not saying a resident shouldn’t have this opportunity, but sometimes we fail to realize how good we have it.
The 100% odds units are litterally garbage. And yes we have it so good... you must be one of the lucky ones.
Thank god colorado and montana are close and provide real opportunity.

If you're a resident and can't draw a pronghorn tag, even every couple years, it's either a) you don't know how to read draw odds, and/or b) you keep putting in for the same unit, 30yrs in a row, because "I live in this unit (or whatever excuse) and dang it I'm not driving anywhere else".

Some people want to just go hunt, and do. Others just want to complain why they can't.

Amen man
I have put in for 12 years of points and will apply next year for a unit a resident should have damn good odds to hunts. 12 years. If you want to complain any non resident can get an otc tag for my home state. My god some of the residents bitch like no other because they expect the best unit every year and if they dont draw God forbid a non resident who built 15+ years of points also shouldn't draw

You can apply for 70% draw odds type tags for a lifetime without drawing as a resident. The variation in random draws makes them inherently unfair. We are trying to share a public resource and are doing a really shitty job at it.

Move out of state and buy preference points.
This. System is fine as it is, haven’t drawn deer or bull elk in a long time but I’ll go hunt general as a resident. If you’re complaining you must not apply out of state in states such as Utah Nevada ect. I bailed on Utah with quite a few points and never started Nevada because I would have been late to the game. Wyoming is the best state to be a resident IMO for opportunity and is fine!!

My bud and I put in for the special draw and drew. With our schedules, we needed to sure things up to execute this fall. My first time hunting WY for antelope, and his second time. Looking forward to putting time behind glass (swaros and windshields) to find two dandy bucks.

Calling the Wyoming system fine is like calling Rosie O'Donnell fine 😉

I'd just like to say @Fetty Wapiti doesn't speak for residents. I drew my 1st choice type 1 tag, 1st choice type 6 and a 2nd choice type 7 this year. I like eating antelope. Last year I drew a 2nd choice type 1 tag.
This attitude from some residents that any tag that isn't a blue chip unit is a waste is actually very common. I know many residents who say they won't hunt on a general elk or deer tag "cause its not worth it". This is utterly ridiculous and to somehow argue that travelling to CO or MT for a "better opportunity" is absurd.

Nope. Ridiculous take.

Chance of never drawing in one year: 0.3^1 = 30%
Two years: 0.3^2 = 9%
Three years: 0.3^3 = 2.7%
Four years: 0.3^4 = 0.81%
...
You have a greater than 99% chance of drawing at least once if you put in for five years. Putting in for a lifetime, you would have infinitesimally small odds of never drawing.

It is the point systems that are inherently unfair. The odds are already stacked in the favor of he with the time horizon to put in for many years.

Quiet bystander on this thread for several days, but I might as well chip in. I’m a resident of Wyoming and have been a handful of years. Lord willing, I will be for a great many more…..

Our group of a few residents has put in for antelope together for 3 years running. We’ve drawn our first choice tag every year. Without doing the math, Our success rate has to exceed 75%. We’ve killed some(to me)really respectable goats in that timeframe. One of those years was hunting one of the very mediocre units. Incidentally,I also drew a pretty exceptional deer tag this year. With a little luck, I’ll kill a dandy.

I suppose if a person *only* puts in for the hardest to draw tags, and have horrible luck then yeah, the random draw system kinda sorta maybe sucks a little bit…but not really. The system isn’t perfect, but I’ll gladly take it. If I don’t draw any of the “good” tags I put in for, I’ll just pick up what leftovers and OTC/General tags I can find and give it a shot and/or pack and spot for friends and family that did get the good stuff. I’m still going hunting, and I’ve never had a bad day hunting.

I didn't draw with 7 points but had a buddy draw the same tag with 0 points. He also drew a moose tag with less points than me in Colorado - I told him to buy a lottery ticket!

As a Wy resident that applies for multiple states I can say our resident random draw is way better than a preference point system and the majority of residents do not want them. That's how we get them shut down every few years.

On a positive note. I applied as a party with my wife and step son and drew one of the higher quality areas in the state. Hopefully we can find a few booners and if we dont we will have a good time looking.
