Wyo Elk / Fishing Licenses

For those that drew a full price elk tag in Wyo, it also comes with a fishing license.
I asked when we would be receiving them
This is the reply

“Good morning, they are working on them now to be mailed this week. If you would like to use your fishing privileges before you get them you can stop at any license selling agent in the state and purchase a Duplicate license for 7$. This will void your original that will come in the mail and the Duplicate will become your license for this fall. If you have any questions feel free to reach out. Have a great day.”

I had the same situation in Colorado a couple years ago. Whoever I talked to on the phone told me to go ahead and fish - and just not worry about it.

You should be able to log into your portal account and print it. I see mine and it has a print option.

I read somewhere that if you have your hunting license, you can show it as proof that you also possess a fishing license.


As with everything that probably depends on exactly who asks you for it and what kind of mood they are in.

It’s printed right on your Elk License.
You must carry the Elk/Fishing license with you when fishing.

It is valid all year up to when your elk licensed season is over

But can you use it in a wilderness area without a guide?

Was wondering the same thing. Heading there in a couple weeks to fish and hike and hoping my license shows up before we leave

Are you sure about fishing license being good only through end of elk season? I understood it to be year round license from issue date which for me was 5/22. So while elk season ends in Nov i believe we can keep fishing through 5/22/27. I’m in CO so try to get up and fish WY semi regularly so I was looking forward to maximizing my fishing there this year.

If you drew a full price elk tag in Wyoming you will also get a fishing license.

I just spoke with the WGF ( a few times actually) about the specifics of the fishing license.

I did get some inaccurate info from one office so I called the Laramie office and they were much more helpful. I asked a couple questions that were not addressed in the Regs and were unable to be answered until they went up the ladder. Expect more specific information regarding fishing licenses and elk tags in the future.

I wouldn’t think it would be hard to just add it so we can print it.

I also have had this issue. And from what I can do, there is no where to access the fishing license on the portal.

Technically it’s paid for. I wonder if a warden would get upset if I just had a screen shot of my successful full price elk draw….. I mean they got my money already.

There must be a difference between the Res and NR fishing license in the portal. I can can see and print mine.

That’s not on mine, maybe because it’s not a 12 month license. Don’t know but it would be nice

I never realized it was as arbitrary as "The fishing license expires when your elk season is over" from the previous thread.

That raises way more questions than answers to me. I've only had one previous to this year and I just assumed it was good for the year I had my license.

Seems like they have some stuff they need to clear up on their end!

No. It means the fishing license is good until your elk season is over
