WY Non Res Elk Results

If you think about it resident hunters and non res are like apples to oranges. For starters since they can hunt every year they aren’t nearly as selective of trophy bucks as someone who waited 7-8 years for the license. Also non resident hunters book guided hunts with outfitters like Non Typical who specifically targets the top end bucks after locating them from an airplane.

I have a friend who lives in Alpine. He never hunts deer in that area. He’s busy bow hunting elk during deer season. But also the big bucks aren’t in places you park and hike into on a Saturday afternoon. They require more of a commitment and effort than elk hunting. Locals pretty much hunt weekends only.

Wyoming knows the value of their mule deer herd. Rest assured they are managing it properly. If you can’t find a buck worth shooting you’re not trying hard enough or going about it the right way.

I’ll burn my 8 deer points next year. I live 2000 miles away but I’ll pre season scout. I’ll take 2 if not 3 partners who won’t be hunting just to glass. I’ll be there a week before the season and I’ll hunt the entire season. I think I’ll have as much of an impact than about 5 or 10 resident hunters.

So anyway good luck in the elk draw guys. I know I’ll be seeing the word successful for a general license like I did last year. But it’s still exciting to see it in writing!

no offense but I think everyone needs to remeber that non resident hunting is a priveledge and not a right. If you have a problem with that then move there. The people of a state should always get the better experience and chances. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Given the facts that Wyoming gave hunters time to withdraw their applications if they drew a tag elsewhere and the Covid virus put lots of hunters in a bad place financially there were lots of withdrawals and I think the odds this year will reflect that. But those guys will be ready to hunt in 2021 so things might not be as peachy. Yep... burning the deer points next year. Good luck... 3 1/2 hours to go. Or is that 10 am mountain time!

Our outfitter said the same thing. I think withdrawals were up a considerable amount this year especially due to COVID-19. We shall see.

I pulled out , that virus terrifies me. Im sure the elk and deer are transmitters of the covid. Not taking a chance.

Elk and deer are also good at distancing themselves from humans so unless they vacationed in China and didn't wear their mask in the airport I would guess elk are probably safer than the family dog.

You're kidding right? Having some of the best deer habitat in the country and leaving it as a general hunt for all residents is managing game properly???

I got a news flash for you, not every resident hunts that general deer area. Yes WG&F manages our wildlife properly.

Well if the trend follows other states there will be no pullouts or withdrawals. Every single state since Covid had an increase in applicants this yr. NM, CO and NV all saw increase in applicants. Now I can’t figure that out but it is a fact. I woulda thought the opposite but it didn’t happen

-A lot do though. I've seen plates from Cheyenne, Laramie, pretty much every county in the state stacked in there before. Its the best general area in the state and everyone knows it.
-Even the guys at Eastmans think at least a few of the units in that area need to go LE for residents. In fact Guy wanted them to scrap the General tag system statewide. Not sure how feasible that really is though, I feel a resident should be able to get a deer and elk tag OTC. But the days of that for a MD may be coming to an end.
-I'd say they do a dam fine job overall. But there are a few places with room to improve just like every other state G&F agency.

I read that recessions usually don't hit hard until at least 6 months after the catastrophic event. Next year might tell the tale...

The ones in New Mexico are fine. Im going after them instead.

We have become a debt and credit society. People don’t put wants to the side for much anymore. They’ll just borrow it or go deeper into debt nowadays way more than years back. Why not, nothing ever happens to you when defaulting.
