So since i came up empty in both the regular and leftover draws (i had a 60-70% chance in the leftover but oh well) I’m looking at the leftover list.

Perhaps against better judgement I picked up a 41-7 tag, mostly because it looks interesting, eliminates the paralysis of choice staring at a big unit, and I’ll be headed through that way in Sep. anyhow.
I am curious/concerned that there just won’t be any elk that low barring any super early weather events, or that the BLM will be cross crossed with trucks just driving around, anyone hunted up that way before?

I’m debating picking up another tag on the east side of the bighorns where I’ve hunted before (or just telling my old man to and I’ll tag along).

Thoughts?

very weather dependent. If it snows up high early may be good . Otherwise may be dead. That tag looks like it is valid until mid october. I would go as late as I could cause there is a chance they may still be on national forest. Obviously you are limited where you can go in 41 with a 7 tag I would check on weather /snow conditions at that time it's a toss up. If there is snow bring chains and a shovel. Good luck

Like Gutshot said I would go as late as possible. With less type 1 tags there will be less pressure on them during rifle season and weather will probably be the only thing to push them of the mountain. BLM roads will get nasty with any snow heavy rain.

Sounds like that might be the move. I’ll probably go twice, once in September to scout (with rifle in tow just in case) to identify parking/camping etc, then again in October.

Coming back round to update this thread, I’m planning on going the next two weekends, but I talked to the wildlife biologist on the phone today, the type 7 and 3 tags are new this year and thus far (22 days into the season) there has been ZERO cows harvested on the type 7 tag

The type 3 has had some bulls trickling out though, I’m wondering how many folks bought both and just harvested a bull and we’re happy, reducing the success for the cow tag

I've hunted unit 40 with a type 9. Same situation, majority of elk are weather dependent, but there are residual elk that never leave the units. Esp cows. Winch and land anchor recommended, maybe chains. Those dirt roads get deeeep when they have constant rainfall. Good luck!!

Thanks! I’m pretty confident i can find some elk this weekend now. My plan depends on the weather a bit as i don’t have any interest in being mired out there.

I’ve got 4x4 but no winch or anything like that

Final update here for posterity when some folks from out of state decide to pick up this tag off the leftover list.

I saw some animals but was ultimately unsuccessful, i would not in good conscience recommend this tag to anyone who doesn’t have mules. The tracks in this area are mostly not passable to pickups and even ATV’s can only go so far.

When people tell you this is rough country they don’t meant you’ll need to have a can do attitude and burn some boot leather, although that’s required as well, most of the unit is extremely broken by impassable canyons, ravines, Rocky shelves etc.

The high country is better but mostly locked in by private land or requires hiking for miles across NF that you csnt legally hunt, and that’s not for the feint of heart.

Buy a tag with less restrictions and you’ll have a better time.

Man wish I would have seen this thread a while ago, I live in greybull I would have posted that no one buys this tag unless you have horses and private access.

To catch an elk between trapper and white creek is rare especially on the public land. weather is the only thing that pushes them in that area in like December.

To catch an elk down low by keddesh or around the mouth of white creek requires a shit load of snow and luck. Those elk will hang up there on top all winter.

I killed a cow up east of horse mountain a few years ago. I hiked from the highway up the burn above post creek for my first load then parked at the mouth of shell canyon for the 2nd load with both rears. Never do that again haha.

At the meeting we had before they put these tags on we told them to put the cow tag on late past the type 6 if they wanted any success.

Thats a hell of a haul and basically another reason i wanted to warn folks off, god help you if you do catch an elk and shoot one across a canyon without knowing your route beforehand.

Overall i had a good time, i decided to focus up high despite the challenges associated with that, saw plenty of other animals, weather was gorgeous for hiking and camping so i won’t bitch about it. But yeah, stock or private access is the only way this is worth it.

It reinforces what i already knew about the types of terrain and style i like to hunt and it wasn’t exactly here on this tag the wider unit at large though I like.

You attended the meetings though? I was wondering, what was their intent for this tag? Like what elk is it supposed to be catching and who is it for?

It's a wrong place ,wrong time tag . I like looking at regs for tags .it initially looks good and you can only use it a certain time, only private, or south of whatever road or river and whatever rules . Some tags are just made for low probability.

The type 3 and 7 tags were made to put pressure on and focus on the elk that live and move around Kanye West's property Psalm Bighorn Ranch. Since it was sold to him a few years ago no one hunts or puts pressure on the elk that are there. It turns into a sanctuary. The only thing we can do is put pressure on the edges. I know of guys who were bugling bulls off his property haha. We have too many elk in the unit and they have taken over to the point the deer are suffering.

There is a group of people around here that have access or can get up there easily to hunt it and it's good for them haha. There good bulls up there to I've seen a few pictures of some taken this year.

It was brought up at the last RMEF women's meeting which was after our men's meeting that RMEF needs to step up and buy Kanye's ranch or figure out a way to get people on it to spread those elk out.

I’m familiar with the ranch, I’ll be honest i didn’t know if I could believe that it was owned by Kanye until you confirmed.

I 100% support that though, it’s a huge parcel that otherwise blocks access to a lot of other public.

Mannnn... This is a hard read for Michigan fella holding a 41-7 tag for his first western hunt. If ANYONE has ANY positive feed back about this unit, please reach out. Foolish mistakes were made. Staying hopeful.

Too many elk in the unit why did they eliminate the bow season unless you have a type 9 tag?

Because guys like me that live in the unit hate September 15th when we have a type 9 tag. If I'm not mistaken they increased the type 9 tags to 150 this year from I Believe a hundred. Most draw elk units are going to a "pick your weapon" kinda of draw. I think 38 might be the only one left with the rifle hunters being able to hunt archery also.

They give out shit loads of tags both cow and "any elk" sadly us select few locals and the some non residents actually put in effort to kill elk. Everyone else just drives around and sits on ridges in their truck.

A few of us are headed up to that area in a couple weeks. Can you elaborate where that burn is that you were able to get on top of horse mountain from the highway? Been looking for a route from highway 14 rather than the 5-6 mile hike from the mouth of White Creek. I’m new so idk if I can PM yet.
