I had a similar shot on a great bull last week in Wyoming. Hit shoulder blade and the bull ran off into the wilds never to be seen again. I did find my arrow broken off about 50 yards away though and only about 3 inches had penetrated.

Didn't see any arrow sticking out off side, no blood spot either. Shoulder blade seems most likely. Either way if he's dead he's rotten by now, or he lived and no worries.

Looking at your picture.......no! That's a deer.

But if it had been an elk, or even a deer (with a deer tag).......ya, that's a dead elk or deer every time at 42. But make that 17 yards and raining, and it becomes much more iffy for me.

I'm about ready to quit Archery, had nothing but bad luck it seems. The next day I went back in same area and walked up on elk at 20yds, stood and looked at me, a yearling cow, Spike, and 2.5yo cow and I just didn't shoot, or couldn't shoot I guess. Then they walked off.

I'd take it. My guess is the hole got plugged and being with other elk he stayed motivated to keep up with them instead of laying down to die somewhere. He's down some where or you screwed up and hit the shoulder and he's running around somewhere.

I did, on Saturday. Saw arrow flying good, heard hit, like a pumpkin thump, he spun to his right and exit stage left with the rest over the edge of hill. I waited a few minutes called for help and started looking for blood. We never found any blood, wasn't raining, followed tracks all around for about 3 hours. I searched for an hour before other person showed up. Didn't find arrow anywhere. With no blood, figured no hit. But no arrow either if there was a deflection. Been back in twice looking for some resolution, checked ridges all around and Creek bottoms, no dead elk.

Why wait a few minutes? I’m not a bow hunter, but if there was a hill, why not haul butt to get eyes on? Or were you in stand? Curious, since I don’t hunt with bows.

Yukon, It is customary in archery to wait 15 to 30 minutes (or longer) after the shot for the animal to expire. If you jump them too soon, you may have a long day ahead of you trying to find it. You never know exactly what that arrow did until the autopsy, so waiting it out is the best method.

To the OP, yes, I would take that shot. Sorry to hear it didn't work out.

We checked all around, a few times, found nothing. Sound was wrong too for a stump or tree or dirt bank.
