Would you buy this scope?

3ish MILS of wind, 1.5 for elevation making it appear between a German #1 and #4 would work for me. Perhaps some small wind guides. Illuminated dot in center and bold bars beyond the MIL marks. We’ll see what they come up with.

All:

It’s a serious question from Ryan. This is not just a feeler post. No presale or other nonsense.

If a 3-12x40’ish mil/mil scope was offered that was consistently reliable and durable, was tested heavily, had multiple reticles that were truly usable/visible from 3-12x, a good/great eyebox and DOF, low profile zero stop elevation and capped windage; and was under $1,500- would you buy it?
yeah, that sounds pretty good to me at that price point. I think the only other thing i'd be looking for is the warranty. if it's lifetime & transferable, then it makes the decision much easier.

Was a picture of a potential reticle posted?
Not yet ... but have you checked out the eval and Q&A thread for the ZP5?

Form gives both an analysis of the THLR reticle (@wyosam - those threads might help to make more sense of it; it's far from a 'mess').

He also has an edited version of the reticle to show what it looks like to the brain during actual usage. There's also a discussion of what elements could possibly be done away with in a pure hunting reticle.

Add all three of those reference points up, and my guess is you'll have a pretty good idea of what this one will end up looking like.

Form posted this in that Minox eval thread. I’d guess it’s something pretty similar with maaaaybe some sort of “depth of chest” ranging bars that measure around 18” for quick field ranging of animals.
Idk it’s gonna be sweet though

With what's in that image, plus a set of 18" quick-range bars on the lower right or left, going out to 500yds, that would be the perfect reticle for absolutely everything I would do with this scope.

It's very frustrating to pretty much have other reticles generally be limited to 1) Stuff designed by, needed by, and genuinely useful to legit snipers/PRS/ELR but is either overkill or just hieroglyphics to everyone else, 2) Stuff meant for Tactical Timmys that becomes nearly useless in low-light field conditions or low-power in FFPs, or 3) Fudd stuff that, at best, is pretty limited in what you can do with it.

Really liking this simplified THLR. A lot.

I wonder if you could just use the vertical hash marks along the horizontal bar as 18" range finders...are their heights used for anything else right now? @Formidilosus ?

With the creep in specs since the original proposal (I’d have bought that), I’m holding out.

But yes, I’m in the market. And yes, the name of the company (primarily for support/warranty) matters.

So right now it’s a qualified “probably-ish”?

And can I add @Ryan Avery :

One of the things I love most about Leupold are their locking turret buttons. But best of all are those alumina caps. Could we just make it so that they thread into this? That can’t be a huge ask?

Worth their weight in gold in adverse weather conditions. Far better than a neoprene tube.

Anyone else thinking this could be a huskemaw branded scope? Jarrod Millar is working there now and seems to share a lot of techniques and training style to things I've read and heard from form. Seems like the perfect guy to listen to guys like Ryan and form on a design and could be in a position to bring things to market. I've also heard some hints that huskemaw has new designs in the works and are trying to re invigorate the brand

Big fan of a German #4 reticle…not sure what the final design will be on this scope. Will follow this thread with interest.
There's no wind holds on a German #4. That's a short range only reticle.

Needs Some better low end magnification. 1.5 or 2x
With 12x on the top end? In FFP? The bottom 3/4 of the mag range the reticle would be invisible.

I don't think people realize they're asking for things that would make this really really bad.
