Other than rucking with heavy weight, what other programs would be good to prepare for a multi day backcountry hunt in NM?

I have come to realize being overly strong is not as advantageous as having solid muscular endurance and cardio. When I am “stronger” but heavier I suffer more on steep hills. Find the right balance for your body type.

Rule of specificity—moving under load in mountainous terrain, aka rucking, is going to be the most direct training activity. But since most people can’t ruck in mountainous terrain everyday before/after work, it’s a good idea to get better at the supporting ends of the spectrum: strength and endurance. That’s getting in the gym a handful of times per week, and getting z2 aerobic work in (trail running would be the most transferable example of this).

Pretty simple—want to get better at hiking around with a pack? Hike around with a pack. Want to get better at being comfortable/healthy under heavy loads? Get under heavy loads. Want to get better at hiking up steep inclines? Hike/run up steep inclines.

I do the Mtn Tough App, makes it easy, pick one of their numerous programs and follow along. Pretty sure they do 6 weeks free. Check their podcast I think it has a code.

uphill athlete program if you are doing a backpack hunt
I 100% agree. I did a tone of strictly Zone 2 training a few years back and ran a half marathon no problem without a single training run. I'm now 3-4 years past those training years and am still out hiking all of my fittest friends even though I've backed off my training and put on a little weight. I've seen the philosophy supported across a lot of endurance sport applications. Glad to see it's making it's way into the hunting world, the secret is out.

It doesn’t really matter if you do t do any sport specific training.

Just make a workout routine that you can stick to, push yourself and get out and climb a mountain once or twice a week.

I’m always surprised how much climbing the mountain kicks my ass even when I’m in good gym shape. I mostly do kettlebell and rowing at home then start hitting the mountain in June. I’ve climbed the local mountain 12 times this summer already, I’ll get another 10-15 shots at it before hunting season starts.
