Question for you, Idaho Elk hunters. Coming out in September for an archery elk hunt in the south eastern part of your state. Have a friend who’s coming along but does not have an Elk tag. Was wondering if it’s worth him buying a wolf tag? He loves the idea of just coming along for the experience but thought it would be cool to be able to harvest something if he had the opportunity. Didn’t know what the population of wolves was like East of Idaho Falls.

Depends on where SE (Do not post unit #'s) If you are hunting YNP border, I would.

If hunting closer to Utah, I probably would not.

There are definitely wolves east of Idaho Falls, and black bears too.

Not many in the SE. Yet anyway. There was a Grizz running around last year right on the WY border.

He would do well to have a wolf and a bear tag in his pocket. Far more likely to see a bear than a wolf, but be prepared either way.

Good to know. Now to figure out a light weight rifle option if he was gonna carry

I live and hunt in SE Idaho. I would say there is nuance in answering your question properly. “East of IF” is pretty broad and I’d say you’re much more likely to run into wolves in certain areas than others. PM me if you’d like

Statistically the odds are a lot lower but they’re there. I saw a wolf a mile from the Utah border while guiding. Only one I’ve seen south east of Idaho falls but it happens. We see them a lot in the unit north east of Idaho falls though.

The short answer is yes, there are wolves in the area. A few years ago a pack east of Idaho Falls killed several hounds belonging to bear hunters in the area. I have seen their tracks as well. There was even a pack hanging around near the windmills east of the city a few winters ago.

That was the pack I’m talking about north east of IF.

You should just buy one incase you run into some. He will have to buy a license if he’s going to buy a tag which will be expensive IMO. If he already has a license it would probably make since.

I’ve hunted Idaho a lot and have only seen wolves on one hunt. I’ve seen quite a few tracks but the only pack I actually saw that I could have shot was in the church and we saw them daily.

Once you kill an elk and have a dead carcass on the ground if you have a few days left, you will wish you had a wolf tag. Game changer. My best method for calling in wolves is a cow call. Regardless of where you are and what method you hunt if you expect to kill a wolf, you better keep your eyes open. I think the biggest challenge with wolves is that they will usually see you first.

I wouldnt carry a rifle along with a bow. To much weight for the off chance you see one, but I would have a tag in your pocket.

Also having a rifle with you during archery elk could cause you a real headache with F&G. You will spend alot of time trying to convince them of why you have it.

Years ago I took some youth on a duck hunt that was youth only. I had my shotgun because we were jumping other game birds that the season was open for while we walked in and out of the spot. F&G saw me with a gun and they raised hell then also showed up at my house later that day. Needless to say I told them I didnt do anything wrong. Write me a ticket or get off my property. They left.
