Question for you, Idaho Elk hunters. Coming out in September for an archery elk hunt in the south eastern part of your state. Have a friend who’s coming along but does not have an Elk tag. Was wondering if it’s worth him buying a wolf tag? He loves the idea of just coming along for the experience but thought it would be cool to be able to harvest something if he had the opportunity. Didn’t know what the population of wolves was like East of Idaho Falls.

Depends on where SE (Do not post unit #'s) If you are hunting YNP border, I would.

If hunting closer to Utah, I probably would not.

There are definitely wolves east of Idaho Falls, and black bears too.

Not many in the SE. Yet anyway. There was a Grizz running around last year right on the WY border.

He would do well to have a wolf and a bear tag in his pocket. Far more likely to see a bear than a wolf, but be prepared either way.

Good to know. Now to figure out a light weight rifle option if he was gonna carry

I live and hunt in SE Idaho. I would say there is nuance in answering your question properly. “East of IF” is pretty broad and I’d say you’re much more likely to run into wolves in certain areas than others. PM me if you’d like

Statistically the odds are a lot lower but they’re there. I saw a wolf a mile from the Utah border while guiding. Only one I’ve seen south east of Idaho falls but it happens. We see them a lot in the unit north east of Idaho falls though.

The short answer is yes, there are wolves in the area. A few years ago a pack east of Idaho Falls killed several hounds belonging to bear hunters in the area. I have seen their tracks as well. There was even a pack hanging around near the windmills east of the city a few winters ago.
