Wow that farmer lives only an hour south of me. You sure as heck didn't see that on the local news. It's sad to see happening and of course all the activists groups have been fighting tooth and nail to keep them on the endangered list and banish any Hope's of a hunt.

I'll probably get bashed as a socialist but I think that if we as a society want wolves in the ecosystem then we as a society need to protect the ranchers and compensate them for any losses. And yes, we need to hunt wolves to keep population in check. Same applies to bears and wolves in Montana, Idaho and Colorado, too.

My dog Ed and I just had a run in with one last week on our land. Ed chased him off our beaver dam as I yelled for him to come back, the wolf stopped, turned on him and at 10 yards apart, Ed decided to come back to me. Thought I was going to see my dog get chowed 50 yards away.

Curious. Is it predation or territory or just chance encounters?

Back here in the east, dogs tangle with Coyotes. It’s occasionally predation on smaller, unaccompanied animals. Apart from that you read about encounters where a dog will run into a group of Yotes and get chewed up.

I'd say it is some of both.
A couple years ago, just on the edge of town a wolf nabbed 7 dogs in a week most all in the same area, then a local guy took care of things.

Very common in the mid west

I go home to NW WI to grouse hunt with my dog.

The wolves will come in and flank me and dog while hunting. No fear of man. Have had them run in and try and grab dog. I started to carry 3 inch # 2 for long range grouse shots 😉

Thank God the locals started to take care of things up there after growing tired of their dogs being killed . The progressives anti hunting pro wolf Dems sure have screwed up once great deer hunting in Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan

Colorado -you’re next

A lady I do land management for had a dog get killed last winter. Nothing but a small blood trail left. Didn't even find the collar. Federal trapper found beds where the wolves were watching the house.
As the above poster said, once great whitetail and moose hunting has been destroyed. But don't worry, the DNR will tell you "they think its climate change, but were not 100% sure".

For you western fellas that think wolves will be great and have no effect on your game populations.....be careful what you wish for.

Like anything else it needs to be managed. The point at which and to what extent will always be highly debatable. Where there are wolves there are going to be encounters. Just a fact of life. I believe a wolf chomping a dog while tragic is not a legislative changing event. I am sure domestic dogs chomp on each other each and every day at probably a 100:1 ratio.

Just read about that Duluth incident, crazy stuff! Creepy what happened to your client too. There's still an over abundance of whitetail in my neck of north central MN but the moose have been decimated and pushed out to the boundary waters. Of course the DNR will never admit that it's a wolf problem. I've been here for 6 years now and I've never once seen a moose, this has been prime habitat for them too. Coincidentally I have also yet to see a wolf. I've heard them from my house and seen plenty of sign but they are sneaky little bastards. Lots of black bears too, It's insane how many are in Northern MN. Wish they would open a spring hunt like other states. I had a couple nice looks at a boar when I was out turkey hunting last month.
