Here's the 38" 10x10 that I had spotted on a pre-season scouting trip. Unfortunately for me, it snowed the night before the opener and the buck moved down the ridge from his normal feeding area on opening morning. Before I could get to him, a guy from New York shot the buck......Oh well, at least I got to take photos for the guy! To add insult to injury, I spotted another large buck that same morning. As I watched the buck, another guy from New York showed up. We watched the buck feed for a bit and he asked me if I was going to shoot it. Bummed that I didn't get the 38" buck, I said "no, you can shoot him though if you would like." He did. We put a tape on him and he was 7x5 that was 34" wide. I went home empty handed and never punched my tag that year. Hunting - you gotta love it!

Offhand, I can think of between 8-12 bucks I have seen on the hoof that have been 38" or wider. Only one of those bucks was during the hunting season. The remaining bucks were all on the Wyoming winter range.
WOW, 8-12 bucks 38" or better?!? That's crazy! I don't think, as a matter of fact, I KNOW I haven't seen that many 30" bucks in my day!
These are all some great bucks! It's really getting me jacked up for summer scouting!!
X2 muleyman, it's coming up fast! Can't wait!!!

Yes David, you gotta love it. Thanks for sharing the pics and story. Wow, that you've seen that many 38 or better bucks, wow!

On the 36" buck "confirmed" I mentioned, same deal. Found him preseason, hunted him 8 days straight, then another guy showed up first time, hunted about 45 minutes, and killed him!!!!!!

I feel the pain.....

Here's a little warm up buck... I don't have access to many of my photos, but I had this young buck photo. Not huge, but the photo's pretty good quality for being digiscoped.

These are not the huge bucks y'all are used to seeing but these are good bucks for the area I live.. The CA F&G classifies these as CA hybrids, a cross between blacktail and muleys..

Man, some beautiful bucks shown here! Occasionally the lucky do harvest something good, as in all activities luck does play a part now and then, but in the end the prepared ones will succeed far often on the trophies!

That last pic is definitely blacktail, small ears, compact rack. Been spending a lot of time on this island looking for one like that.

BOHNTR- I love that deep forked buck on the left.
Looks like some great winter habitat, too.
Looks like you were close (as usual.)
