Back in the early 50"s it was legal to shoot burros. My Dad and a couple of friends went out in the Mojave Desert and shot a couple. Not much good for table fare, ended being dog food.

They are beautiful to see but also a scourge on the environment. The federal government wastes approx $100 million each year on the care and feeding of feral horses kept in corrals to keep them "off range." This is all to satisfy the animal rights folks instead of humanely eliminating the problem as should be done with any invasive species.

The native North American wild horse was extirpated about 12,000 years ago. The west might be a much different biome if this had not been the case.

The amount of time and tax money spent on these horses is ridiculous. The paddocks full of them may be more inhumane than culling some. Plenty of horse meat is eaten by humans. Remove the stigma.

Great shots. Being from the east coast we aren't exposed or honestly educated on the feral horse and burrow issue. It wasn't until recently when listening to a GoHunt podcast that I learned of the damage they do to native plants and animal species along with the tax funding that is used of them. After that it's been hard to imagine how anyone supports them.

Up to 10% of BLM's budget is spent on Feral horses, that's more than BLM spends on endangered species.

I've seen herds of wild horses while antelope hunting in central Wyo. Neat to observe but they are so destructive to the natural habitat and compete with other native wildlife.

I once heard a story about a guy that would go out and shoot dozens of horses at a time until he got caught.
All I can say is 'not all heroes wear capes'.
There are so many great ways to solve the feral horse problem. Ideally the law from 1971 would get changed.
