Wife’s gun choice

I’m debating really hard on what gun to pack for my wife’s backcountry elk hunt. Take the trusty 7 that shoots lights out and she has no problem shooting. It’s a little big for her but given time to set up she handles just fine. Or do we take the new hipster 6.5 creed. It will shoot just as good out to 5-600 and it is a little smaller for her to handle. We hope to keep shots less than 450 no matter what gun.

Both guns shooting the Berger VLD in either the 168 or 140s. Decisions decisions

I would let her decide, whichever one she has the most confidence in, and after 28 years of marriage if she misses, well who's decision was it to bring THAT rifle ?

Yes which-ever one she feels most comfortable with and wants to hunt with. Both will kill elk as far as you think you might be shooting, in the 450 yard range.

Good call on letting her choose. Then I won’t be blamed.

I’m just a little doubtful on the “ what if” scenario of needing to shoot from 600. I’d hate to see a big bull and not be able to take a shot or feel 100% confident in the 6.5 at that distance. It’s big country and sometimes it’s not possible to get any closer. So if that scenario arises. Anyone think the 6.5 is under gunned?? Taking about 5+ year old bulls.

Guess I just need an extra push from someone else that says don’t worry about it and put it in the pump house and get ready to eat blackstrap.

You say that the 7 is "a little big for her".......if that means that the stock is a bit long,
I'd suggest the other rifle. Too many times I've seen women try to shoot the old man's
longer rifle and they just can't get the scope eye relief right because of the long stock.

As has been said, "go with her personal preference."

I had a young lady come into camp with her 25:06. She knew it inside out and was a great shot with it. She tried her husband's 30:06 and couldn't stay on paper so she went back to the 25:06 and the elk took 2 bullets before tipping over.

(and NO!!!! I do not recommend a 25:06. The 7 or the 6.5 will do the job better.)

You would be fine with either caliber. I watched two elk get shot last year with a 6CM and a 108 grain ELD-M at over 400 yards. The most important part of the equation is to get her shooting in different field position and situations. Tanya was awesome at shooting on a bench and in the prone the first year. But once in the mountains it was very difficult for her to find animals in the scope. Fast forward two years and lots of shooting in the mountains, she’s deadly:)
