Why do some Sellers insist on Friends And Family PayPal Payment Mode ?

I’ve never had a problem with F&F as long as it’s a poster that’s been around for a while and seems legit. If you click through their posts and they seem like AI or really bad English it’s probably a scam.

I’ve casually bought and sold off of here for years, and it’s always been a great experience. It’s not tough to check feedback, posts, and if needed, a video call. My preference, if it’s a more expensive item I typically won’t deal with an FNG. I generally pay F&F, unless the seller requests otherwise. Maybe it’s changed, but the first few items I sold G&S, PayPal held onto the money for 60 days or some BS. As a seller, I’m not going to take all of the risk. I have good feedback and a solid history here. If that’s not good enough, I’ll sell to someone else.

Lots of people get scammed doing FF simply because the seller is a great member only they didn't implement two stage verification and some one hacked thier account placed a bunch of great deals in the classifieds and ripped off other members who now have zero recourse.

There are plenty on this thread lobbying the greatness of FF who currently have an venerable account.

Simply put using friends and family puts you at risk if your not friends and family.

Is there a way for someone to tell if another person is using 2FA, or any other account securing measures?

I insist because things are already expensive and I'm not paying fees on top of the taxes I already paid for the money I earned to buy nice things. Either trust me or don't and go elsewhere.
I only try to buy items from people who are known users or have sold multiple items. I'll take the risk until I get burned but I feel like users on this forum are pretty straight up.

Got a tax form from PayPal just today actually. Nothing was over $600 at once, but I accepted a pile of smaller G&S payments throughout the year and it apparently went over the threshold. NOT happy at all! I will no longer be accepting G&S payments going forward.

Reading through this thread, I now understand why - it’s not just transactions over $600, which I thought the rule was, it’s a total for the year. I even had a guy make multiple payments for something large in smaller increments so an individual transaction wasn’t over $600. 100% on me - my bad, guess I didn’t understand it completely. Lesson learned, never again.

A text, video call, or phone call solves that problem. It’s real easy to tell if you’re talking to a scammer…

This is what I require when buying something moderately expensive. A 2 minute FaceTime call to prove they have the item, and quick once over.

It’s been foolproof for me. Had two different scams tried on me. Both got real squirrelly and backed out once I pushed for a call

How do y'all handle it when something shows up and there is a difference of opinion on the condition? Or mere blemishes during shipping?

I had a guy drop a 6x SS into a box an send it. Didnt wrap it or anything......
Those situations are the worst. What's "good" and is it truly different from user to user?

It's one of the reasons classifieds are such a headache and time suck for moderators

I’ve only had one difficult member out of a couple handfuls of that situation.

@Steve300xcw actully that one member was involved in several condition discrepancies and a few other concerns so they aren’t around anymore. Initially both sides are a bit tense but typically they both come to a reasonable solution. It is a time suck though.

Glad I started the thread because I have read some very interesting replies and it appears some are getting somewhat educated in how PayPal operates.
I have had occasions where I had to get PayPal involved in less than honorable transactions which always resulted in a favorable judgements on my behalf, something which would never have happened with a Family and Friends transaction.

As for me I will voice my opinion just like some of the others.
If a person uses Goods and Services when selling an item just to avoid the fees or to shield themselves from the tax guy you are being dishonest, meaning if you screw them you would probably screw me too.
I will pay what you feel you have to have but include the fees, it's the right and only way I will do business with you

Ah yes, the money that’s been unconstitutionally taxed when my employer gives it to me (payroll), taxed when I receive it (income), taxed when I spent it on the gear the first time (sales), then taxed when I resale it for a loss (Payal G&S)…the IRS guy who’s drawing a paycheck from all my other taxes will be just fine…and if the Feds can’t fund a couple more wasteful useless programs that are outside their constitutional purview as a result of my missing G&S sales, it’ll be a win for everyone.
