Who travels for turkeys?

I am very interested in Merriams in an "exotic" type location. Nearest "mountain-ish" terrain for me would be the black hills but I've heard the birds are hard to come by there. I'd love to hear first hand from anyone who has done that hunt.
There are certainly birds to be had in the Black Hills both in Wyoming and South Dakota. Lots of public land available. I live in NE Wyoming, and I'd say there are almost as many out-of-state turkey hunters as deer hunters these days. Lot of guys hunt with guides, but I don't seen any reason a person would have to in order to have success.

SD non-resident lottery really helped with pressure this year. There have been plenty of birds for some time, just too much pressure.

Trying to get a Goulds tag in AZ and I'm not burning my points for a hybrid. So that means if I want to hunt turkey, I get to travel.

Got a Gould's in Mexico. Got a Rio in Texas last year and a day later I got my Merriam's in New Mexico. Went to the Yucatan this year to get my Oscillated.

Next year I'm going to the Carolinas for my Eastern. That leaves an Osceola that I just need to get off my butt and book.

Once those slams are done, I won't be traveling for a turkey anymore. Once I get my Gould's in AZ, I'm staying in-state and killing hybrids hopefully in the spring and fall. Who am I kidding; I will likely continue to travel for turkey.

Live in S Florida. Primarily hunt Osceolas every year. Have traveled to Georgia for Easterns. Looking forward to putting some time into completing my slam.
Traveling in general is an awesome experience, doing it to Turkey hunt only makes it better!!! Couch hopping, camping out, sleeping in the truck or a hotel is all part of it, and fun too.. lol

SD turkey numbers have crashed over the last few years as well. I live on the border of the Black Hills. 10 years ago there would be 60-80 turkeys in my yard every day fall through spring. Now, I might see 60 in an entire year, might.

They alos changed the Black Hills regs. Used to be ulimited tags for NR in the Black Hills. Now it is 2250 I believe and you have to apply.
Not many people want 80 turkeys in their yard. They are very destructive. Sounds like efforts (unlimited tags) that were put in 20 years ago for population control worked. Now they are onto the management phase of conservation.

Since everyone on rokslide always wants an argument, google search turkeys in casper wyoming. They invaded the city, and cause a lot of damage to property and small pets. A segment of the population feeds them making the issue out of control. The game and fish traps the flocks and relocate them away from the city. There are so many this trapping does not make a significant difference on numbers.

Turkeys are a wonderful bird and I am glad we have them. However, anytime a species is introduced in an area they did not originate, local over population will result in issues.
