Even though this thread a couple years old, I just switched from Gaia - so I’ll include my input too for future readers.
My use case is primarily finding dispersed camping spots all year long, e-scouting for big game hunts out West, and offline navigation. Gaia has checked those boxes for the last 4 years, but I’ve recently switched to OnX. OnX folks seem to be listening to users because it’s getting better and better, and Gaia does not. 3D mapping (on iOS) is still not available in Gaia… which is so powerful in the mountains… and they seem to be focusing on connecting the app with social media-like feeds (aka the “Home” button in Gaia now).
OnX has issues too but they have a better trajectory than Gaia for my use case. The one thing I still use Gaia for is large offline Topo maps… I like to download Topo-only maps for entire states when I am roadtripping and this is not viable with OnX due to low resolution satellite layer always downloading too. I will likely keep my Gaia subscription for this unless they increase prices again.
Hope this helps
