Which tikka for long strings of fire?

I have a culling job coming up and need a new rifle.
Will definitely be a 223, will definitely be a tikka.

The biggest worry i have is poi shift during longer strings of fire with the lighter barrel models.
I'm expecting and preparing for scenarios that require multiple mag changes and 30+ continuous shots.
**obviously im not expecting sub moa accuracy across 30+ continuous shots, just trying to minimise the impact of barrel heat as much as possible.

I'm thinking of going with the CTR for the 10 round mags and the heavier barrel.

***unfortunately an AR15 with 30 round mags are out unless i jump through 47,000 government hoops, coz Australia......

Cheers 🤙

I would not really worry about long strings of fire in a Tikka. Properly made modern barrels don’t really have that issue. There’s a big thread about it around here somewhere.

With that said, the .223 CTR is a nice rifle.

I’ve been firing long strings of fire with my old T3 sporter and cheap 5.56 while still getting acceptable results. I wanted to see if I shot any differently with different suppressors. I shot ten on each target from AB to Unknown to Airlock, then waited a few minutes and shot ten more in reverse order. I felt like I got sloppy, but was generally satisfied that the suppressor made no difference.

I use the wonderful Waters 10-round magazines.

I dont know what firing rate you mean by continuous. The lite profiles should do fine when they get nice and hot but CTR is a nice choice without being crazy heavy and should be a little easier to shoot well.

There's going to be times where I stalk up to/drive up to groups of 100+ feral goats.
Obviously im not going to get them all, but I'd like to get as many as possible. Thats why im thinking of getting a heavier barrel and several 10 round mags.
Wont get 100 but might get a 1/4 of that.

I'm definitely over thinking it 🤣🤣

Sounds fun, and messy!

You want the heavy barrel rifle when shooting out of a vehicle, it is much more stable in a window rest, even better than a ctr, use lucky 13 10 shot magazines, let me know if you need some, I have spares.

Ive watched that guy who culls camels and stuff a few times...

He seems to like that pump action AR10 thing. Do they make one of those that'll take a 30 round mag in 556?

Properly stress relieved barrels don’t walk or cause groups to open up when they get hot. Barrel mirage becomes an issue however. A standard T3 lite barrel will stay inside its cone for 30+ shots if you have a mirage shield. A CTR won’t change that much. Whatever you get, get a barrel band/mirage shield and you won’t have to worry about it.

Boy am I jealous of your predicament! That sounds like a blast. Pun intended.

A lighter barrel will heat up faster than a heavier one but will also cool down faster. I haven't noticed much poi change in my Tikkas when they heat up but have not done any real testing to track it.

If I was culling groups like that, and my job was to cull as mah as possible, my choice would not be a bolt action rifle. It would be an ar style

I have the stainless tikka tx3 lite with 24” it’s what I cull with also. I have both mamga and NDr mags I prefer NDr just due to size.

No issues with large shot strings of 20, out side of suppressor mirage.

I’m still using factory stock but I took a dremel and floated it.
