Hello,I recently purchased a tikka t3x 300 win mag,and I'm not sure about scope mounting options.i am planning on useing my rifle for alaska hunting ,and I'm not sure what the difference is between useing just scope rings,or useing a pic rail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Depends on the rings you chose. Talley ring/bases mount directly on top of the receiver using the pre drilled and tapped holes. (They have plastic plugs in the holes that have to be removed). You have to decide what size and height rings you need for the scope you are mounting. 1" or 30mm, and low, med, or high depending on the size of the front objective of your scope. If you mount a pic rail you need rings that fit a pic rail. Tikka receivers have dovetail slots that you can purchase rings that mount directly to the receiver slots. Warne is one of the companies that make rings specifically for the Tikka dovetail slots.

I'll go against the grain. I prefer stout rings and a rail jb welded to the action. Picatinny isn't going anywhere and I feel it offers the most as far as durability and mounting flexibility. You can also swap scopes between other guns without re-leveling and re-torquing caps. Allows for mounting scopes with short mounting length such as NF NXS 2.5-10, etc. I also prefer a strong single cross bolt for mounting to the rail. I had a pair of warne rings with two smaller screws and have had them Crack, I've also had talleys that wouldn't hold zero. My short list is seekins, hawkins, NF, tier 1. Those are ones I've used and appreciated. There is plenty of other ones with designs that lend themselves to durability and straightness/tight tolerances.

For direct mount ring options, sportsmatch are the go to, unknown munitions once released should be great. I've seen one photo of Burris direct mounts that looked good. For any direct mount, what you want is something that uses both the dovetail and a recoil pin.

There are multiple examples of cracked Talley lightweights on this forum. Also, the vertical split on Warne direct mounts is known to damage scopes.

List of rail options linked below, there are some advantages to a properly done Pic rail, as mentioned above. Do it wrong (greasy, no recoil pin/lug, loose) and you've just added potential failure points.

The Spuhr SCT mounts are worth the extra couple ounces. About 4-5oz total depending on height for a very solid direct mount one piece.

If you have rail options that your considering, I would look very hard at the Mountain tactical rail. It has an integrated recoil pin to help out. Considering its a 300 WM and a tikka, it will thump pretty darn hard. I put one on my Tikka 7mag for ease of mind. And considering, they don't weigh that much.
