Which one, and why?

I am in the market for a new rifle, after mediocre accuracy, and then a failure to fire (multiple brands of ammo) with a tikka t3 lite.
The criteria:
under 6.5lbs
locking bolt
7mm-08, or 270 (what i'm set up to reload for)
under $1600

What I have found is Browning X bolt, or Kimbers. Am I missing anything? Which one, and why?
TIA

Have you sent you tikka back?? They do have an accuracy guarantee

I would go browning of those options, Ive had a few clients with Kimbers and they have all had issues with feeding cleanly. Thats with the Anodrack/mountain ascent. I think the Kimbers are better, but ive never had much to do with them.

The brownings are a nice rifle, nothing super special, but nothing wrong with em

I’ve got two Xbolts and find them to be very nice rifles.

My wife picked out her anniversary present, a big game rifle. She went with the Savage Lightweight Hunter in 6.5 Creed. It’s not as refined as the Xbolts but every bit as accurate and half the cost. it’s very light but manageable, as I would expect the 7mm-08 version to be as well.

I'd second the Weatherby suggestion. Another thought- Bergara Mountain in .270 is under 6.5lbs. It would be $200-$300 bucks over your budget.

I own a pair of kimbers and genuinely believe they are one of the greatest values on the current market for an all around hunting rifle. If locking bolt wasn't an issue I'd look at a fieodcraft. Blind mags and crf have become a preference of mone also....

Just a caution considering the vanguard. The trigger is two stage and barrels are 24 inch making the OAL a litter longer (not a bad thing for 270). Also the Monte Carlo stock is very hard to work with unless it fits your body well IMO. Other than that they are great rifles. I have an X Bolt and the quality is there. It is my preferred hunting rifle and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Caliber is to subjective for choice as you have not indicated desired use.

You could also consider the Remington 700 mountain SS. It has a great stock on it but a pencil barrel. I personally prefer sporter weight barrels.

I've now had both....

The .270 X Bolt I just got was the easiest gun I've ever had to get to shoot well. Literally. Round 1 was a sighter...adjust the windage and elevation and rounds 2,3,4 went in the a 3/4" group 2.5" high at 100. Shot a 1.25" group at 200 and a 3" group at 300. Ready to hunt in half a box of ammo. Doesn't get much easier.

I've had a couple Montanas that shot pretty well but both were way harder to get that way than the Browning and harder to shoot well.

Have you considered the Howa Alpine?
Light weight, quality stock, either a detachable mag or floor plate, accuracy guarantee, comes in 7/08 and they're a great price leaving more money for better optics?

You can get a lemon in anything. You could buy another brand and end up the same way. If TIKKA will make it right, I'd let them. That'd be more than some of your other options would do.

The 270 Winchester is built on the 6 lug action, weighs 5# 10oz
54* bolt throw let's you mount optics lower

For a $1,600 budget I'd be looking at the Barrett Fieldcraft. Checks all your boxes accept the locking bolt.

I have two .280 X-bolts that shot the first handloads I tried at .5"
Two others took a little more work... but accurate nontheless.
They offer lightweight and accuracy, with a locking bolt.

Savage LWH.
Not pretty, not stylish, not sleek.
Definitely in your price.
Definitely in your weight.
Definitely does what it says on the box.

If you ever see mine for sale, it's because the wife has left me & is selling off my shit online.
