Which magnum rifle

Ive never known anyone that dosnt like brakes due to noise… only read about it… Guns go bang regardless with either more or less recoil..a sharper or flatter noise…i switched to suppressors so dont use brakes any longer, the lack of air is the biggest benefit imop second is sound. Suppressors have negative effects though, chunks of carbon randomly fall free into chamber if not in a cleaning routine and can ruin your brass… ive had pieces get formed into shoulder of brass numerous times leading me to clean suppressor often…put your rifle on buttstock and move bolt back and fourth and pieces will fall onto bolt face.. not ideal, barrel takes more time to clean more often. The benefits outweigh the negatives for i so suppressed it is.

Nobody has said 6.5PRC?
And my Seekins came with a great brake.

It gets said a lot but I can remember if this thread specifically had it. It's a good compromise between recoil and capability. I'll be honest though, if I don't expect shots over 600, I'll typically grab the 6.5 creedmoor. I have a rokstok on that one and it shoots very well. Nothing like spotting your shots on game.

Same here. Being able to spot shots is one of the most important things that gets sacrificed with magnum rifles.
I worked my way through the 300 magnums (300wby, 300wsm), 7mag, 6.5prc, down to the Creedmoor family of cases.

I am struggling to justify keeping the 6.5prc. My smaller cases just keep working.

BUT, op was asking for a magnum. So 6.5prc would be my recommendation. And asking about a brake. The Seekins rifles come with a nice factory brake. I’d pick up another Seekins before getting a bergara

Same here. Started with a 30-30 and 308win. Moved to a 300wby I refused to put a brake on for several years. I shot it quite accurately too. Moved to a 270win, then 270wsm. I bumped up to a 7mm rem mag for long range target. Then I found the 6.5creedmoor and have been reasonably happy ever since. Well, not enough to avoid building the 6.5prc but my goal was to limit the amount of components I stock for reloading. I'm still deciding if I want to sell my thumpers. I thing the 300 and 340wby will remain as safe queens but I doubt I'll ever shoot the 340 again and have no need for the 300.

I should add that none of those chamberings were unsatisfactory in terms of performance on game. I did have some concerns with bonded bullets not performing as quickly as I'd like but that wasn't due to the generic cartridge.

Edit: after writing that I feel like I need to sell some stuff 😞

One thing to consider is barrel life and how much intends to shoot. Id expect 7-800 rounds of optimal accuracy befor spinning a new barrel on pending on barrel quality accuracy expectations, load etc..and how much available to invest in shooting in general. Irrelevant to some matters to others.

Study on Muzzlebreaks

You can draw your own conclusions, data doesn't lie nor does fluid dynamics.

Not all muzzlebreaks reflect the design of this study. What this study does not do is state that muzzlebreaks are evil. Although this study isn't from a shoulder fired rifle, the science is the same.

@Dfou, might be better to "sell" him on a paricular magnum cartridge by teaching what and why a magnum is what it is and then gravitate toward a 6.5 PRC or 270 WSM.

Depends on a lot, money, his personality, the dynamics between you two, your philosophy, Etc.

From reading the thread.

Get him what he wants, an HMR in 300 WM. Offer to cut and thread for a muffler, but let him pick barrel length and such, have him pick out the can as well (not a scythe though). Forcing a middling choice on him will likely result in the worst of everything with him still wanting more, but loosing the benefits of lower recoil.

Consider setting him up to learn. Offer some advice about recoil, then see if he still wants the 300 WM (he probably will). Then, before he ever shoots it, make him record accuracy with the 7mm-08 in positions he uses hunting. Hand him a few hundred practice rounds of 300 WM, keep a supply of practice rounds for the 7mm-08 as well, and retest accuracy with both at 6 months, as well as seeing which one he puts more rounds through.

Disclaimer: The above is not how I would opt to do things. Rather it is an attempt to fit advice to the individuals based on limited information from this thread. Advice is dangerous, if I was wiser I would probably be smart enough to hold my thumb (I'm typing this on a cell phone), but unfortunately for Rokslide I am not wise.
This is actually valid advice. He’s not new to guns, I’ve explained benefits and negatives in depth but he’s a very strong willed 15 year old. A lot like his father was at 15. As much as I like smaller calibers in my old age, I’ve always loved big caliber guns. Still do.

I absolutely hate being at the range with braked rifles in use. Life is too short to deal with that. I'll come back later.

@Dfou
Dark horse option,
But what about an AR15 or AR10?
223, 6ARC, or large frame Creedmoor?
It’s got all the cool factor, will give loads of practice opportunity

This ^^ I been shooting a 16" 6arc bolt AR upper with a brake that has a thread on blast can/diverter. Actually works pretty stinking well.

if not then 6.5prc or WSM

Get him a 300 WM if it is what he wants. Some shooters like that. Better off with a PRC of some flavor.

Show him ballistic tables for them. Maybe that will help.
As a father, I'd be tickled pink that he enjoys hunting enough to be wanting a new caliber. My son shoots a 300 Win Mag. It's a Savage High Country with some weight to it. Suppressed, it's a soft shooter and he shoots dimes with it. Word of advise: If he ends up with one and it's not suppressed, make sure he wears ear protection even in the field. A 300 win mag with a brake, is a brutal SOB on your ears.
Double ear protection…

Sometimes you have to say no to kids. 300 with brake is extreme. Suppressed is OK

I agree with the “parenting advice” given early on, I give it to everyone, not just kids. Becoming deadly is cool.

Micro concussions are real. I couldn’t stand going to matches after a couple years. I had to stand way back. I got headaches after a match.
So after reading the info in this thread I think we’re probably gonna go with the HMR in 7prc since it comes with a 24” barrel instead of the 26” on the 300 win mag. Assuming the 24” will be better suited for a suppressor.
What’s everyone’s go to suppressors and recommendation on ammo in 7 PRC for whitetail

I’m gonna give it one more try to convince him a Seekins in 6.5 PRC is a better idea but he’s pretty strong willed lol
The Unknown Suppressors OGL made my 26” 7 short mag feel nicer with the 4” going over the barrel. I love the OG on my mouse cart rifles.

If you're near me, I'll let him shoot either my 300WM or 338WM.

I'm old I suppose in a young man's eyes, but with modern bullets chosen correctly there's little advantage in big magnum cartridges. I have worn the finish off my 338 twice, it's very accurate, and effective, but not pleasant or necessary. Same for the 300 though it does offer some gain for long range.
