Which diaphragm Elk call are you using?

I started this spring with the Rocky Mountain calls, purchased the 3 pack with the black domes and there other 3 pack with the gold domes. I can use the RMC's fine but the cut in the black plastic dome cuts up the roof of my mouth.
Purchased the Phelps BRO pack from Born and Raised, these calls are easier to blow and I think sound better then the RM calls. I decided that I wanted to try some regular Phelps calls since one never knows how long something like the BRO calls will be around so I picked up the Black, Green and Gray Phelps. Personally I think the Phelps Green and Gray sound and operate the best of them all. I want to try out the Maverick and Pink from Phelps here soon.
I was all set to become a RM fan boy, even purchased there bugle tube but now I guess I'm a Phelps fan boy using a RM bugle tube. The Phelps external cow call rocks as well.
As for call storage do you chew tobacco or know anyone that does? A chew can makes a great call case, just drill a few holes in the lid and bottom for air flow. I did put a plastic lid off a can of some fake chew my buddy chews instead of the metal lid that comes on most skoal cans.

Trying a bunch. Rocky Mountain AllStar (Green) is excellent for me for a bugle. I just got the Black, Grey and Pink from Phelps. Each has a different pitch and require different tongue and air pressures to get similar sound cadences, The Rocky Mountain Green, Phelps Black and Gray are excellent for cow sounds too. Pink for me is a little more difficult to get a smooth controlled sound. ElkNut and the Bro have me pumped. I plan to call a lot this year.

Primos has a little container that holds three diaphragms that came with some turkey calls. Search "Primos see thru call case" on Amazon and it comes up. I dumped my turkey calls out of it and starting using it for elk calls, but it didn't keep me from loosing them. The washer/dryer seems to effect the sound too, so if you find one you like, order a couple extra.

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. I ordered a variety from Blackovis. Got the 3 pack Rocky Mountain calls and some Phelps. The dip can sounds like a good idea but I don't dip. Looks like I'll be buying a can of Jerky Chew!

It's never too late to start a bad habit

How long can you expect to be able to use a diaphragm before it’s no good? If I’m trying to practice 10 mins a day, 4-5 days a week for a few months leading to the season, do I need to grab a new call before the season starts?

Carlton's triple and a few Phelps calls. I have so many of the older Phelps calls still that I haven't tried the Amp calls yet. Guess I should head over to Sportsman's and grab a couple

FYT, heck ya! I use 5-6 calls in Sept. alone.. You gotta call enough to locate bulls then adjust your calling to fit in. I do hunt the entire month but I do not want a call breaking down on me with no replacement, calls are too cheap for that!

I'm a big fan of the Phelps Amp line. I have pretty much tried them all and like them all. For me, I can't tell much difference between them all as far as ease of use. They all seem pretty friendly.

Just to slip in here regarding calls and how many. A buddy and I have a formula that we use for diaphragm mouth calls: 1 call for every 12 hours of ACTUAL IN FIELD USE. We’ve used everything for Elk(Phelps, RMC, Carlton’s) and Turkey(Woodhaven, Hooks, Goosebat) and we’ve found it pretty accurate. Now, sometimes it’s not the latex that wears out. Sometimes it’s the tape. When that happens, and we feel the reeds are still intact, you can actually buy waterproof medical tape, make a stencil for the frame and reed, and reapply your own tape and bring them back to life.

Neither do I! Luckily, I am not short on friends who have one that is either empty or about to be...

I've used mostly RM (Bugling Bull) game calls in past. My preference was the yellow (mellow yellow momma). It has been around a while, but the last time I bought two of them a couple years ago they had either changed the latex or changed the stretch or I got two lemons that needed some more QC and I didn't like them. I also like the black Rockstar.

I tried out the BRO (Phelps) calls last year and prefer the blue, but can use them all. I've been playing with the Phelps Maverick lately and like it also.

Both RM and Phelps make some good calls, but each person has to figure it out for themselves. Some guys prefer one over the other, some guys could bugle with a blade of grass, and some guys suck no matter what they use.

Im gonna be looking to get some very soon as well. It looks like the Phelps calls are pretty popular. I have to at least try the pink, Jason blows the heck outta them things.

I wanted to post my early update. I’ve had the 3 Rocky Mountain Elk calls and 2 Phelps for a few days now. For me, the Phelps is much easier to make sounds and to my ears, sounds a touch better. Thanks for the all of the suggestions.
