7saum or 300wsm
Ammo availability kills both of these rounds unfortunately. I own a wsm and haven't found ammo in 8mo. Plus wsm is limited to 180g or less unless you hand load.

After my post last night I got stuck reading ballistics charts. Imo if you not going g to hand load and you want something smaller than a .30 with available ammo the 6.8 kinda wins the race. People are just now starting to play with them and figure out how far they can be pushed so in the future you should have some great reloading details when you can find primers and powder.

I'd go with a 7 rm over the 6.8 western any day, it'll stomp it with factory 168-175 Bergers. Also its a proven cartridge that won't fade away like the 6.8 will likely do

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to be very diligent looking for ammo and components. I think ultimately focusing on the bullets matters most. Then what will drive those bullets to the right velocity.

I may find I have been looking in the wrong places......has happened before!

I am big into long range shooting and hunting. I love it. I have a lot of specialized calibers and some crazy custom builds ranging from 6mm out to 338’s. At the end of the day the good ol’ 300 win mag will kill anything in North America, and can easily do so out to 700 yards. A Tikka or Bergara chambered in 300 win will get you what you need. I also own a 7mm and equally love it. Before this current craziness finding off the shelf match ammo for both was easy and cheap. You can’t go wrong with either. For elk I tend to lean more towards heavy, hard hitting bullets (I hunt with a 338 Lapua) so I would lean more towards the 300 win.

Well, I have been looking around. It looks like I can get some of the components I need.....in 30 cal. Some of the 6.5 bullets are around too....7mm seems to be tricky unless you want something "odd"....lol

I have been racking my brain over this. However, I decided the 300 win mag is the deal. I went through some boxes and I found some 300 brass, 30 cal bullets, reloading dies......enough to get me some range time for sure. I see I can also get some ammo and components online. I have some primers but I'll be on the look out for more.

The platform that is the front runner for me is the Winchester Extreme Hunter . Seems like a well thought out factory gun. 26" barrel, 1 in 10 twist, threaded muzzle with a brake, cerakote, decent stock (I don't hate the B&C's). $1400 at sportsman's. Any reason not to get it??

I saw the tikka in weidland veil, looks good too. Not available right now, and for $1199. I think the Winny offers a bit more for the $$....am I wrong?

T3x stainless 300 WM. Thread and add brake of your choice. You will be ahead of the game $ wise and have a much better rifle.

I see the superlite 300wm is available. Is the muzzle diameter sufficient for a brake? (Pretty sure the difference between it and the regular stainless is just the fluting) I believe Tikka has a slightly larger barrel profile on their models now offered with the brake in order to accommodate it.

Stay away from the Tikka if you want a 300 WM. 1:11 twist, and really short mag boxes will really hamper your ability to shoot the long, heavy bullets. Find something that will allow at least a 3.60" cartridge.

Any smith should be able to thread 1/2X28 no problem in 30 cal. If you get a new 300wm the twist should be 1:10.

That's what I did, 300 win mag that is. Seekins PH2 here. Have some 178 and 200 eldx that I want to try out. Still shooting up some factory loads to get brass and looking for powder, but have everything else. Ive only shot 150's so far and even they shoot well out of the new rifle. Looking forward to going bigger, just need to find the time. I like all the ballistics of the new stuff, but the 300 win mag is no slouch.

FWIW, I paid $1900ish for the Seekins. It's pretty sweet if you can find the other $500.

On the new ones they finally updated the 300wm to 1:10. I don't know if they did the same for the rest of the 30 cals.

That is good to hear. I'm assuming they are still limited to 3.4 ish magazine?

OP, I would stay away from the XPR compared to the Tikka. If you said M70, I'd say go that way but the Tikka is far and away a better rifle than the XPR.
