Which Can for my .280rem

Looking at finally getting a suppressor, and think I have it narrowed down to a Thunderbeast. But not sure if I should go with the 7 or the 9. Mostly just hunting application with my 280rem 24" barrel. Also will be used on a 16" 260rem bolt gun, and possibly a 5.56 for fun. What's your vote? Also, if you really think there is a better all around option out there I am all ears.

30 Cal will work on a variety, haven't paid a lot of attention to suppressors lately but seems like dead air is well liked, I would opt for a can that works with a mount as opposed to direct thread on.

Yeah, that was another questions I forgot to ask, was if I should go direct thread or not. Seems like direct thread would save weight and simplify things. Why go with a mount?

Just my humble opinion but I think it simplifies things if switching to and from different guns, for my needs shooting ARs etc I would prefer the QD. A lot of muzzle devices like a muzzle break/suppressor mount work together and aid in performance from what I understand, also if can was removed you'd still have flash suppression or a muzzle break for recoil etc. I don't think weight would be terrible but it may not be worth while if you only intend on suppressing bolt guns.
I was always told if I got a can to get a 30 Cal so I could use it on more than one caliber.

I like my TBAC ultra 7. I would agree is using one with a QD so you can easily swap between various rifles with only needing the ~$100 muzzle break/adapter from TBAC

My experience with thunderbeasts brakes didnt strike me as a QD option though. Or do they make a variety of mounts?

If it's a hunting gun, get the lighter one (the 7 vs the 9 or I would even consider the 5). I would go .30 cal and direct thread. That way it will work on almost anything and you don't need a QD mount unless trying to switch back and forth multiple times during a single range session. I have a QD mount for my AR and long range .308 and direct thread for my hunting guns. Direct thread maybe takes 30 seconds longer...

I have the SilencerCo Omega but am actually considering getting a Thunder Beast in the 5" version for a light weight hunting suppressor. You're not going to care about the extra 10 decibels (or whatever it is), but you will care about the extra ounces while hiking mile after mile.

I’ve been looking at the same thing. Just an FYI:
Ultra 5–
7.6 ounces (CB mount)
9.4 ounces (direct thread)

Ultra 7–
9.7 ounces (CB mount)
11.5 ounces (direct thread)

From Zak at Thunderbeast, via email:

“Ultra 5 is a good choice to "take the edge off". The Ultra 7 will be a
lot quieter”

“You can go 5, and a lot of hunters do, but it’s closer to an unsupressed .22 in loudness”

The decibel scale is logarithmic. The difference between 120-130db or 130-140db is significant. I'd personally opt for a heavier but more "hearing safe" can. What's the point if you need ear pro anyway?

OP, I also like the idea of the direct thread, 30 cal. I'd go TBAC ultra 7. Doesn't get much more hassle free and versatile than that.

Do any of you have experience with Liberty? Only asking because I picked up a Mystic X for my AAC that’ll be in my hands in a month or six. Will shoot coyotes with it but wondered how it might do on my Grendel or CMs.

Good point. I just looked up the decibel ratings for each can and the 7 makes the most sense.

"On a typical .308 bolt action rifle..."
Ultra 5 will be 143-145 db and weigh 7.6 oz.
Ultra 7 will be 134-136 db and weigh 9.7 oz.
Ultra 9 will be 132-134 db and weigh 11.9 oz.

Seems like a no brainier to get the Ultra 7 for the greater amount of sound suppression for a small increase in size/weight.

Ultra 7 is incredible. Honestly it is hardly noticeable on the end of a rifle in terms of weight (I also have some 23oz cans though that I am used to using).

I don't think there is a better can out there than one from the Ultra line from TBAC.

TBAC Ultra 7 hands down....direct threads. I’ll gladly give up the couple ounces and length for optimum suppression.

Rumor mill is there should be a TBAC 6” can that meters the same as their Ultra 9 being unveiled at SHOT.
