Which animal would you hunt?

not sure where you are going or how they set things up. I went to a high fence hunt for does (he was thinning the herd and we bought like 5 does). It was horrible - like going to a petting zoo and killing some.

Saw some axis deer while there and they are pretty.
This is a 1st for me. Definitely not turning down a free hunt

I was in a similar situation and I would definitely go for the Axis. They are excellent eating and a cool mount as well. I would not bother with the blackbuck if it is a one or the other situation unless you do not like venison and prefer the mount of the blackbuck. The blackbucks are tiny little things. The axis will also probably be a more interesting hunt, which is a relative thing if it is high fence over feeders. Initially I was not real interested in doing a high fence hunt however I had a great time on my hunt as it was with friends on a friends ranch where we stayed and were treated to fantastic food, drink and hospitality and someone else was footing the bill.
This is how I have felt. Not sure what to expect. I ruled out Aoudad because they are native to us and I don’t want to hunt it in a fence. I am sure I will have fun and this will tell me if I would want to do high fence again.

Actually, Aoudad are NOT indigenous to North America. They're an imported specie to the United States.

One note. Ask them what the most difficult to hunt would be. Trust me when I say that in some of these situations you'll drive around in the truck until you see one, which may not take long... at all. Or you can ask to do a more spot / stalk or a stand hunt over a feeder. Usually they will set you up with the guide who knows a certain pasture best and how to approach. Enjoy the hunt as it is, I am sure there will also be a nice lodge / food and good times to be had.

Depending on how the place is set up and operated, you may not have your pick of what you shoot.

Bow or rifle makes a pretty big difference too.

Not all high fence places are the same, the black buck can be very difficult to get into bow range spot and stalk, same with the axis deer. The mouflon can be challenging as well.

Some places are tiny, and animals are tame. Some are large, and the animals are very wary of humans , and challenging/fun to hunt.

Black buck meat is excellent.

If it’s a challenging hunt, and you can do spot and stalk, I would pick a few different animals to target, and take the first you get an opportunity on.

When I have flown home with animals from anywhere, I just buy a cheap large cooler from Walmart that all the meat and capes will fit in. Keep it under 100 pounds( not a problem for 1 animal), and check it in with my baggage. It was an extra $50 for the weight. Check your airlines baggage policy.

According to my “host”, he set it up so we could choose between those I listed. Even if I can’t, that’s fine. I will enjoy the experience.

Thanks for the replies, I believe I will plan for axis as my 1st choice, blackbuck as my 2nd.
Y’all have been great.

Sorry, i didn’t mean the landowner wouldn’t let you pick the animals you wanted to shoot, just meant you may not have a shot opportunity while hunting if you just pick one species to target.

You plan sounds great

Have fun!

Update:
Just got home. Had a great time. I was going for axis but blackbuck was on the hitlist too. There were some thing that should have gone differently but I had a great time. No animal for me but met some cool guys and had beautiful scenery. This was definitely NOT shooting animals in a petting zoo. We hunted damn hard. Out of 8 people, one gemsbok, one Pere David’s and one small blackbuck was killed.
My buddy (we paired up) and I found a small blackbuck in the last 2 hours. Since I have gone west and killed 1 animal and he hasn’t, I gave him my gun and let him take him down! Only 2 curls but a fun spot and stalk and it was fun to see his excitement. Great memories.
