I have the wife interested in seeing some mountains that we haven't seen, thinking about Nm or Az driving from Mo
Really just going somewhere new to us with some killer scenery, we've been all over Mt all the way to Glacier, sw Co, pagosa area, Wy... any suggestions?

have you taken the steam train ride out of chama new mexico? or the train from durango to silverton?

no, neither one, we sew the exit to head south to Chama but never did go, we also drove to Durango, had lunch and headed back, saw very little thre. we did spend a lot of time in the Wimenuche Wilderness

Ah, you were almost in some of the most beautiful parts of CO when you got to Durango. You just had to go a little bit farther. Do a search for the colorado Apline Loop. The whole area from Durangu north through Silverton to Ouray, then West to Telluride and east to Lake City. Unbelievable. And if you have a Jeep you will be in heaven. Awesome wheeling in this area. I moved to Montrose, CO a year ago to be very close to all of this beautiful country. And the hunting and fishing is pretty good here too. Might as well get some scouting in too. :)

I am a fan of the CA Sierra Nevada mountains because this is were I live BUT I cant justify you passing up the said Western CO Durango to Telluride region that was previously mentioned since its WAY closer for you. The Sierra are awesome BUT some of the highlights such as Yosemite are NOT good in the summer due to MEGA crowds.

We did the same thing last year. We went to Aspen Colorado and Glenwood Springs. We went to see the Maroon Bells in aspen. They are amazing. Glenwood Springs was a cool place also. Lots of hiking and impressive mountains to see. We ran out of tin but there is a hike you can do that takes you to Hanging lake. The pictures I have see it looks like it's worth the hike.

Here is a picture I took of the Bell's

i stood and watched them fire up the engine in durango and chama. hard to believe them things ran. they had one torn down in chama to rebuild. again hard to believe. back then they had no welding. so it all had to be hot fitted or bolted.

the you get smoke and cinders in your face when you ride cause the cars are open. and you can walk between cars as you look way down in the bottom of the canyon.

My family has always enjoyed trips to CO, so can only offer that...after always spending time in RMNP and along I-70...last year the wife and I got away for an anniversary trip to the Aspen area which I highly recommend. The views up high were amazing, was still a lot of snow in late June last year. We also did our first overnight backpack trip to Conundrum Hot Springs...I cannot explain how awesome of an experience that was to soak in 100+ degree pool (all alone for awhile) surrounded by snow capped peaks...9.5 miles from civilization.
Highway 24 from Vail to Buena Vista also offers a lot of great scenery with Holy Cross Wilderness, Mt. Elbert & Massive outside Leadville...and the Collegiate peaks down toward Buena Vista. I was amazed how much the terrain changed from I-70 down to Buena Vista from dense pine forest to semi-arid/rocky terrain...and beautiful lakes all along the way. If around Leadville, I suggest getting down to the eastern shoreline of Turquoise lake...that backdrop across the lake with CO highest peaks...and sandy beach shoreline was fantastic.

Regardless - sounds like you have plenty of options and a great trip ahead - Enjoy! And share some pics!

That sounds really cool, I'm trying to get the wife interested in a backpack overnighter but she's not falling for it, I'm a fan of Co but have only been to SW Pagosa area, never went out 70 at all...thanks
