I've always taken Mountain House for my backpacking trips, I think mainly because it's readily available and I just kind of expected freeze dried was freeze dried. Last year my hunting buddy had me try one of his freeze dried dinners, I think it was Backpackers Pantry, and it was way better than any of the MH that I had been eating. So, this got me wondering, what do other folks recommend for freeze dried meals (not individual dishes) manufactures?

I haven't tried any other brands but have noticed at least for me it depends on the mountain house. The MH Low sodium New Orleans style rice and shrimp with ham is probably my favorite. After seeing a thread on the AK outdoor forums I don't think I could ever try Alpine Aire or after seeing the pics Alpine Hair.

I do plan on getting some of the #10 cans of Auguson farms to try and see how they work out.

I've tried almost all the brands out there and MH is the best by far IMO. I even tried making my own dried meals last year, but found it way too time consuming for sub par tasting meals.

I've found MH to be the best tasting as well. the raspberry crumble is the best treat along with dinner at the end of a hard day! Nice to add some calories to dinner when you need em.

I have tried most of the meals offered from MH and BP and use both of those. They both have good ones and bad.

This is my first year to go no mountain house. A friends wife is a thrive dealer. So I bought a ton of thrive. Thrive foods have 0 artificial additives and taste way better than mountain house. Course there is a upfront cost, your not buying ready made meals just the thrive ingredient and mix different meals together. A few weeks ago I spent an entire day in my den with several tables set up making the meals for this years backpack hunts, I place each ndividual meal in a zip loc Baggie. I make up a day at a time breakfast, Lunch dinner coffee and energy bars and place a days food in a one gallon zip loc bag. I think I have 60 days supply all in a big Tupperware container. I've found the thrive stuff tastes way better than mountain house. I just use recipes from the book freezer bag cooking.

My favorite Mountain House meals are the lasagna and chili mac w/beef. I like to add pepperoni and cheddar cheese to both of them to up the calories and the flavor. I've tried others and some are OK, others I would never buy again. My long term plan is to buy a dehydrator and put together my own meals. You can buy the ingredients in sealed cans, but it seems expensive to me if you want a decent variety. This year I will probably go with some of the simpler(less ingredients) recipes along with the old standby MH favorites.
