I like to get up aways from where I think they are bedded. If possible I will glass down into them. Providing I can move about a bit without blowing elk out I also I like to loft midway(general term only) between two known bedding area. I have seen bulls up and moving at times to another area with bedded cows, however it also allows me to get the bead on multiple bulls so my eggs aren't all in one basket.
Dug this thread up in a search. Ton of great info!!
I have a tough time sitting still. A nap is always nice.....and maybe some lunch, but that combined is only an hour or so. Glassing opportunities in North Idaho are tough as well.
So lets say it is peak of the rut and you hunted the AM but have not located any animals.
What do you do?
My gut instinct is to stalk around on some skid roads and cold call.
Usually sit wallows early - mid season. Dependent upon country- sit water if it’s dry.
Or still hunt through timber, or run ridges cold calling into different smaller drainages.
