Where I hunt in Colorado, it’s open high country, and I typically set up on the nearest ridge to where I watched the bucks bed down that morning. Because of that, I’m usually looking at shots in the 400+ yard range. There are times I can get closer, but if I move in and then sit for 4–6 hours waiting for them to come out, I have to be far enough away that I won’t get winded if the wind changes throughout the day.

I’ve been burned by bucks at 330 yards and at 400 yards when the wind shifts and blows in their direction.

agreed, got winded at 1/4 mile once.

Had one at 32 yards, one at 450. From hunts I've been on, you're either sub 250 or well past 400. All depends on the terrain.

Most of mine are in the 300-400 yard range. That is mainly due to the open country we hunt mule deer in. My last one was just under 500 yards. My son's last one was 460 yards. My closest, outside of archery kills, was 175 yards. Anything under 400 is a slam dunk if you practice correctly so I rarely feel the need to get closer. I haven't missed one inside of 400 since I was a kid 35 years ago.

Longest shot buck 200 yds. One at 146 yds. Three bucks killed at 100 yds. Two at 75 yds. Two at 50 yds. Two at 40 yds. One at 17 yds.

Twelve mountain or high country bucks at total of 993 yds = 82.75 yds average. I am the greatest hunter on this thread! Thank you!

I wasn't comfortable shooting beyond 300 for the first 4 seasons so I guess it’s skewed.

Several shots ended up right around 200. 3 were sub 100

I voted 100-200. I thought through the mountain bucks I’ve killed the last decade, while there has been some necessity for longer range shooting, most of the bigger ones were killed between 60 yards and 150 yards.

Same. Only once ever had a shot over 200 yards. My wife took one past 200, but all the rest inside 200, some way inside. Most were pretty close, actually - the biggest was about 25 or 30 yards, my wife's biggest maybe 40 tops. Mulies are pretty tolerant of getting closer if I move real slow, never directly at them, and always be looking at something not in their direction. I have successfully closed distance from 300+ to 20 yards or so on them on numerous occasions (usually looking for another point, as I have only ever hunted them in 4 pts or bigger areas).

I don’t keep records per se but out of at least 60 bucks, I have only shot 3 over 200 yards that I can recall. One at 700, one at 220, and one at around 210. All ID, WA, and NM.

Most of mine have been under 100 yards. My biggest (avatar buck) was at 35 yards. I did get one at 450 yards though. Generally, I hunt near or in heavy cover.

My sample size of two is less than the lower bracket of the poll.
My buddy 110 yards after spot and stalk.
My mule 80 yards after positioning for ambush.
