Where I hunt in Colorado, it’s open high country, and I typically set up on the nearest ridge to where I watched the bucks bed down that morning. Because of that, I’m usually looking at shots in the 400+ yard range. There are times I can get closer, but if I move in and then sit for 4–6 hours waiting for them to come out, I have to be far enough away that I won’t get winded if the wind changes throughout the day.
I’ve been burned by bucks at 330 yards and at 400 yards when the wind shifts and blows in their direction.
