I must suck at stalking, but I don’t think I’ve gotten closer than 30. Granted I don’t hunt the mountains much. I hunt more sagebrush and broken topography.
I was the same in eastern Wyoming, eastern Colorado and western Nebraska. It’s just open prairie and sandhill, sagebrush, bluffs, and tons of open spaces. Once you learn to stalk in that stuff I feel like the supalpine is much easier to get stupid close.

Sometimes in that sage brush, flat open country 30-40 is the closest you can actually get due to terrian. With the stick bow I just pass the stalks or use em for practice. Try to hunt areas where I know I can get sub 30 for the stick bows. Rules out a ton of spots out west, but for compound guys shouldn’t be an issue if they are good shooting at 30-50 yards.

I didn’t kill a mule deer with the stick for like the first 4-5 years. Just took 100s of stalks to get it somewhat figured out. I still mess up every single year lol.
