Whats a good salary to you?

Yeah 100%. We decided not to have kids and it’s been great. We make good money, have things paid off, I can hunt and fish whenever I want without sweating the financial aspect of it, vacations each year….of course I will die alone in an assisted care facility but whatever.

Hope your health holds. People don't know how finicky good fortune is until life hits them square between the eyes and they drop to their knees.

Yes. Yes I could absolutely put a dollar figure on that. Of course it would depend on the single income salary. If you’re a doctor making 350k/year, sure stay at home and raise kids. If you make 50k/year, you might want to think about letting the government do your parenting for you.

The government has difficulty teaching them to be literate by the time they’re 18 years old.

My wife used to own a daycare. When the folks dropped the youngsters off in the morning, everyone was completely frazzled. Parents running behind, cranky kids that didn’t want to be awake. When the youngsters got picked up in the evening, the parents were exhausted and cranky. Rinse and repeat 5 times a week.
Yuck :( thankfully with my shift work schedule and my wife’s schedule we make it work where we watch our kids, with some help from grandma now and then, I get why people have to use daycare but I’m thankful I get to raise my kiddos

I’m not sure what that has to do with anything but yes, I also hope my health holds.

However, if my health were to go to shit, I’d rather not have kids. I’d feel terrible watching them change their life and goals around because of me.

That  is the problem. Too many people wanting the government to raise their kids.

And you wonder why your co-workers wife wants to homeschool...

Good on you though for being upset for him.
Maybe you’ve missed the part where I mentioned that he is not happy with his wife’s choice.

You don’t need to take all of this personally, I can tell what I’m saying is bothering you.

Let me re-cap what I’ve been saying about this specific dude:
-he makes very little money
-he wants his wife to work
-his wife refuses to work
-they are so broke that strangers worry about their kids and give them stuff
-they have a shitty life.

And most parents that homeschool aren’t nearly as smart as they think they are.

I’ll also add that so many kids who suck in school struggle because they have jackasses for parents. Uneducated, lazy parents who see school as nothing more than daycare rather than holding their kids to a high standard has consequences.

But that just goes back to the simple truth/fact that about 50% of people who have kids really should have kids. Unfortunately there are far more shitty parents out there than good ones.

…and the shittiest parents always think they are doing a good job.

Laughable? Hardly. Tell me you're out of touch with reality without telling me you're out of touch with reality.

I can certainly be out of touch with reality, but I would like to know how to pay someone $35/hr and it only cost me $250k for nearly 2 decades of service. My bosses would be very happy with me.

So, when the school fails, it’s the parents’ fault, but the parents aren’t qualified to teach their own kids?

It’s strange how the kids taught by their parents are scoring higher academically than the kids taught by educated teachers.

Strange how most homeschool kids don’t even do state testing so your claims are sort of…not true.

Also strange how in homeschool situations, often times it’s the parents doing the grading and deciding that their kid is doing well. I’ve seen it time and time again, parents think their kids are special so they say they are doing well at homeschool.

While public school is far from perfect, it has equal amounts of drawbacks as homeschool does. Neither are perfect, they both sort of suck. Homeschooling just gives parents a false sense of success and safety.

Most school districts are currently making a push to increase literacy standards but the school day still ends when it ends and so many parents aren’t willing to do what is required for their kids suuccess at home. Homework dosent get done, kids play video games instead of reading or being read to. Parents are drinking and smoking pot after a long day at work. In many if not most cases it’s a failure of parenting.

It reminds me of my buddy who was pissed off because his kid was falling behind in math, he swore up and down he was going to do whatever it took to help his kid so he met with the teacher. He was even more pissed after that meeting because the teacher told him to work with his kid at home.

When he said he’d do anything it took, what he meant was he was going to ask the teacher to do more for his kid….just isn’t a possibility when there’s 30 kids in a class.

Shitty parents blame the school system and have unrealistic expectations while they are also unwilling to put in a few hours in the evenings to help their kids.

The homeschooling vs. School debate is always a hotbed. Different strokes, different folks imo. Benefits to both, but we choose regular schooling after weighing the pros and cons. It wasn't close in our household.

I do feel bad for the dad's that work tons to let their wife stay at home. I know my kids would hate it if I worked more than I do. Dad's are missing or not there enough, in a lot of households.

Someone without kids lecturing others with kids and how to raise and school them…..

Got it.

Man, I learned a long time ago that you can’t imagine life with kids until you have them.

Then you can’t imagine life without them

What if that person was an educator who has been involved in teaching, curriculum development and administration while also working on state education boards for the better part of 25 years but decided to not have kids of their own, are that persons opinions about education still invalid since they don’t have kids?

People always think that because they have kids they are experts when in reality, the kids spend more time with their teachers and friends than they do with their parents.
