What’s a good powder for an 18” 7 SAUM? Not sure with a short barreled rifle. R22 or H1000 or something else. I have those two in hand. Shooting Berger 168 VLD Hunting Bullets.

Do you already have the 18” barrel? H1000 makes a good powder. I’ve heard rl26 but got pressure signs early. With the lighter bullets I’ve also heard h4350 is a good option.

RL-23 is great in my 22" SAUM. Definitely share where you end up. I've been curious about 18" performance.

I'd be curious what you get as well.

Everything I've ever read is the powder that gives you the fastest MV in a 26" barrel is the same one that will give you the fastest MV in a 16" barrel.

I have had good luck with H4831. RL 23 was also good, and a tiny bit faster but not quite as consistent with the 162 eldM. It did well with the 175 EOL

I tried H1000 and hit pressure early and inconsistently

No personal experience but I've been thinking about building a 20" 7 saum and reading a bunch of stuff on diff forums. N570, h4831sc, and N565 have been coming up a decent amount.

Try Winchester 760. I use it for most of the bullets in my saum

I have a couple ladders loaded. Have not got to the range yet. In the teens with 20+ MPH winds here.

Too slow for what?
I loaded a velocity ladder with 169 Hammers with H4831sc, N560, and H1000. After 65 grains of H1000, additional powder was not linearly producing addition speed. At 67 grains, velocity improvement basically stopped.

My rifle has a 20” barrel and is throated long.
