What would have happened if I would have shot this round?

My .300 RUM hasn't been shooting very good so I've been working on eliminating what it could be. In the process I decide to switch to factory ammo for a baseline and picked up the only factory ammo I found in store. Seemingly pretty reputable company but still had to pay $122 for a box.

It had been a few weeks since I shot last and last night I had some time so I got my setup to go shooting. After my first shot I went to load the next bullet in and in the process I found this. Not super impressed about it. I got in touch with the manufacture and we're working something out but for $6.10/rnd I'd expect better quality. Internet search revealed I haven't been the only one to find these. I also understand that things can get missed when dealing with big scale operations but I got me thinking about what would it have done to my gun if I would have shot it? Could it have caused any damage?Screenshot_20241121_062835_Gallery.jpg

Is it a split neck or a fold in the brass?

Measure the neck diameter. Good chance you never would have got the bolt closed if it is too big.

Juat my guess and others will have more knowledge than myself. If neck diamter is normal it would have went bang and you may or may not notice. If diameter was at the wrong spot....in theory you could chamber the round and squeeze the brass tight around the bullet. At this point it's anyone's guess what you pressure would become. And with extreme pressure you can get extreme results.

.Just my guess.

Classic thin-walled cylinder failure of the case, caused by the stress associated with the interference fit between the bullet and the neck. Bad QA/manufacturing control on the part of the cartridge company. Cracks in the neck appear frequently after firing cases that have been reloaded multiple times (especially without annealing), leading to embrittlement of the normally-ductile brass. If a case already has a major crack in the neck extending clear into the shoulder like yours, shooting the round could have led to very negative consequences, including more global case failure. Way better to inspect before loading, as you did, and don't take a chance.

Contact the manufacturer and tell them what you found with pics and I would suspect they replace the box. That’s a major QC oversight. No telling what MIGHT of happened but glad nothing did
I contacted them and got offered "swag" for it. Not really too interested in swag. I would much rather have the problem replaced with a proper solution not "swag"

i’m doubtful that bolt would have closed. But if it would and you’d sent it? This is just a guess but I think the bullet would have left the barrel and maybe the case would have became stuck.

On another note.

Is the 300RUM so much more impressive then the other 30 magnum that is worth practicing at $6.10/rd?

I can’t imagine I’d practice with it at all which isn’t a good thing.

I'll check it tonight. Maybe the picture quality isn't high enough but the brass is folded in the shoulder and the crack goes the entire way through the neck.

Maybe. If I had a cheap spare 300 rum I'd test it :)
No it isn't worth practicing with. But when you spend big money for a custom rifle and it shoots 2-2 1/2 moa groups and won't hold zero then you gotta start somewhere with eliminating if it's the rifle, suppressor, or scope.

Also partly why it was $122/box was it was all the local sporting goods store had for rum that was 210 grain. Pretty much needed it for my hunt and it's what I have left over

Sounds like you need to start reloading.

Has it always shot that poor?

Maybe if someone has a 300 .rum that they want to do an experiment with we could use this round and see what happens

Shit! For $6.10 a round I should probably start reloading for you lol.

What scope are you running?

I ran out of handloads because the gun didn't hold zero traveling to Montana. I've reloading with Peterson brass. This gun has been kinda a nightmare to figure. It is it's own topic. Nx8, bartlein heavy Palma 1-9, manners lrh stock. Gunsmithing done by Bartlein. Over 100 rounds through the gun and I got 1 group that shoots just at moa. Lost zero on my gun driving out there. Rezeroed and then drove to where I hunt. Lost zero again. Bought a box of factory ammo for backup. Shot about 9 inches at 400 yds. Drove 7 miles to the trailhead and hiked in 5 miles. 3 days later i shot and killed my bull in 2 shots at 300 yds. Both shots hit about 14 inches left so I lost zero again. Trust me it's been a nightmare to worth with, and then I found this factory round last night . I know ill probably get flack because the nx8 is an idolized scope and I've beat hard on a shv and it worked flawless but I'm pretty sure the scope I got is an outlier.

Interesting. 🤔 I’m sure you have but have you stripped it down cleaned and retorqued everything?

Something has to be loose.

Good on you for catching it. If it chambered it probably woukd have shot fine. Maybe neck woukd split and maybe bolt would vent some gas. Hopefully not in your face.
Not something to try.

Interesting about your rifle shooting poorly. Most interesting part to me is that you took it hunting and shot at a critter knowing its condition. You reload, but maybe only own one rifle? Not sure what to think of all that.
Seems to me scooe or scope mounting is likely suspect, but dont know the particulars of your setup or skill level.

Yeah we did that but the loctite we used didn't hold good and I know that bases on bigger magnums can come loose with shots. Current plan is to shoot groups without suppressor and see if it groups different. If not I'll put my shv on and see if it groups different. I know that shv is flawless. If it still doesn't group then it's gotta be the gun. If so I'll let bartlein handle it unless they don't cover it which I'll ship out to a buddy in Montana that knows Dan coffin pretty good and have coffin go over it

Yeah there's a lot of hindsight here. When we shot it before leaving to hike back in we had some allen wrenchs and thought maybe scope bases came loose so we made sure those were tight. You'd think driving a few miles would be fine. I also knew that I was going to be limited to within 300 or so yards. I brought my other rifle with also and knew it shoots fantasticly but I had this gun built for this hunt and really wanted to use for it and know where my limits were. Yes I probably should have used my other gun. Yes it would have been the "ethical" thing to do. Did it make a difference in the end. Not really. Could I have done better, yes. That's why I'm trying to get it fixed now.
