If you had 12 elk pts in Colorado what would you do?

I’ve been building points in Colorado without much of a plan while I focused on other hunts. After looking at my options in other states and CO I’ve come to realize I probably should use them sooner than later.

I’ve historically been an archery hunter but have started to have a desire to try a different season, weather, tactic, etc. my initial research has me looking at 501 1st rifle.

What rifle season do you prefer? I typically like to backpack hunt but do have a wall tent for late season.

I would recommend the fall time myself. Too late in the season and it gets too cold, depending on the unit of course.

I wish Colorado allowed pt averaging with a buddy instead of taking the low pt holder for the party app

I'd be cool with that change once there's a point fee, and add in that either the whole party keeps the tags or they all turn them in. No gaming the draw by strategically turning tags in.

In the current system it would be too easy to apply the whole family and just stack points for 5 people and rotate your application partners to go into every draw averaging 5+ points every year and then have the other "party member" turn their tag in to keep the points.

Burning 12 points I would want max time in the field, and during the rut. That's always going to be archery for me. Just figure out what the top unit is that you can get with 12 points, and go.

What units will need 12 points is really up in the air right now with the changes they are making in 2028. A lot of units jumped 3 and even 4 points last fall and it's anyone's guess if that was a one time bump of guys burning points or if it's the new floor.

If you look on GoHunt and HuntinFool right now, they haven't updated those point levels. The only place to see is the elk draw stats on CPW. I've found once you open that big pdf if you hit "Control F" it'll help you search by unit pretty quickly.

100% turning back tags needs to be very limited and getting pts back should be as well. Getting $ back is fine IMO but pts needs more restriction.

That’s a good perspective on maximizing field time. Due to family I’m probably limited to a week either way.
