Reviving this thread a bit…
I have only shot 3 elk with a rifle, and all have been with a 300PRC - 208 ELDM At 220, 225 ELDM at 417, and 225 ELDM at 625.
- The first bull took two shots, but seemed dead on his feet.
- The second bull dropped on impact, and appeared to be dead. When I got to him, he was still alive. I’m unsure what happened on him as there were two shots in him (the second shot at 10 yards), but both seemed through lungs.
- The bull last year was hit slightly higher than desired (appears high lung on the video) at 625 and it dropped him. He got back up and ran off. I never found a drop of blood and I watched him run for a literal mile through snow.
I was fortunate enough to draw a spectacular Wyoming elk tag this year, and I think I am going to swap out the 300PRC for my 6.5PRC.
I have a 6.5PRC with 156 Bergers loaded by Unknown that I love to shoot. I think it’ll get the nod this year as the “knock down power” of the 300PRC seems to keep eluding me. I will report back on the performance of the 156 bergers if I get an opportunity.
