What shotgun are you all using for Turkeys

I bought a pawn shop beater single 12 for my turkey gun. Half a roll of camo duct tape and it’s ready to roll.

Is that a New England Pardner?

I have a Rem 870 12 gauge now.
It shoots great but looking to get a little nicer gun that is Semi Auto.
What are you all using.
Been looking at some but reviews on about anything is all over the place.
Looking for something in the $800-$1000 range that is optic ready to run a red dot also.
I’m still using my old sloppy benelli nova 12ga but am going to get a mossberg sa-20 turkey… not fancy but I don’t get to chase turkey much (the 5 day trip I’m on now is generally my only turkey hunting because it’s a 7.5hr drive to get here) and it would be perfect for what I do, and a big upgrade from my current setup

Put a red dot on it and I will probably do 2 trips, my solo blue mountain hunt and another southern Oregon hunt and take my wife, and daughter if she wants to go, they would both dig turkey hunting, but they wouldn’t like it here, way too much walking and cold nights in a tent

But I will likely be over 20 miles walked today when I get back to camp, so a 5.5# 20 gauge sounds nice

I do get a kick out of killing turkey with my hoopty gun, and it certainly works, especially with the right choke and TSS, but I’m ready for an upgrade, turkey hunting is something I enjoy a bunch

Have a 20 ga Rem 870 Express Magnum youth model that stacks them good with Win 5 shot Turkey loads and a single shot Revelation, iirc, 410 that works well with 9 shot tungsten loads.

Personally, I’d rather gut an elk than clean one of those stinky feather ridden Dino birds. But I do like bbq wild Turkey breast. So both of my Turkey guns are loaners…

You didn’t tell of anything “greener” in either of your posts.
I should see if he wants to buy my nova, it has a fiber optic bead, has never been cleaned, and has never missed a beat, I think the sloppy tolerances everywhere make it unbreakable, and can’t get too dirty to jam (think self cleaning) and I made a great mod last year… a limbsaver pad

No low balls, I know what I got

Very true. I sighted in using lead on my 410 and at 25 yards the pattern was not tight enough to be useful. The tss pattern at that distance was about 7”. It’s amazing stuff.

I was able to get a decent pattern with Winchester double x 7.5’s, copper plated lead. Local shop has it for $12.99 a box and browning .410 tss #9 for 32.99.

Here was the double x target I think 88-90 hits in a 10” circle at 25 yards.

Turkey hunting again for the first time in over 20 years! Taking my oldest daughter and mother out last week of April into first couple days of May(WI 3rd period). I used to use a 12ga 870 but that’s gone now and all I use for everything is in 20 and a 16 gauge. I’ll be taking my Benelli Montifeltro 20 and shooting standard copper plated #5s. Within 30 yards should be fine after patterning. The closer, the more fun! Looking forward to it! Nothing like the spring woods coming back to life after a long winter!

Kid uses a 20 gauge and we switched to TSS #9's this year.

WOW.....That stuff turned that 20 gauge into a VERY deadly turkey gun. That poor bird looked like it got struck by lightning....

No disrespect, i probably wouldn't hunt that pattern. TSS in .410 is only way to go. 40 yd TSS would be denser than that lead pattern at 25yds.

None taken. I wasn’t really saying I was hunting with it. Just I was surprised it was that good. I’d use that for a squirrel or rabbit though. I use ninja 9.5’s

Hell yea. Would make quick work of them.
TSS is a b**** to purchase/zero a gun. In 20/12 ga at reasonable ranges, Winchester LBXR would 100% suffice and patterns really well in most gun/choke combos.

The Apex TSS stuff is NASTY in 20ga per my testing. 40yds w/ 9/10 greenleaf blend.

I shoot an Ithaca M37 20 gauge "Turkey Slayer" model that I tricked out a little bit.

Bought it about 9 years ago when Ithaca was still selling guns and had them put a "Deerslayer" stock on it since I knew I'd run an Aimpoint on it. The slight Monte Carlo on this stock does a good job raising the head up to look straight through the optic. Ithaca lightened the trigger to 3 pounds. Gun weighs about 7# so recoil is negligible. The barrel is "pinned" from the factory so accuracy is dependable. This is a pretty unique gun and unfortunate that Ithaca has more or less faded away as a company so I'd guess it's the only one of its kind. Not that anyone will, but you could probably piece one together with parts!

I usually shoot Winchester Longbeard XR #5 or some flavor of TSS, lately Apex 2.75" #8. Trulock turkey chokes tailored to those loads. The gun hammers with both.

Lots of good memories and birds with this one for me and about a dozen other people. Easy gun to pass to someone and say "put the red dot on his head and send it."

I do enjoy autoloaders (main shotgun is a Beretta A400 Xcel), so am thinking of building up a Beretta A400 or A300 with a 24" barrel as an additional turkey gun.

We generally use my Browning Goldhunter. I think this is the only picture I have of it. It's killed a lot of ducks and a few thunder chickens I've the years.
