What makes a 23yo Tacoma worth $11,000?

In our part of the country the 80's and 90's Toyota pickups are king. If it has the 3.4 and independent front end you pull it into the garage and put a straight axle under it. If it has the straight axle and the 4cyl. everyone is jealous of you. If you are lucky you have one that has the double transfer cases in it with the 4cyl and a straight front axle and the bed has been chopped at the rear tires and it has 40's on it. Those are $15,000 pickups no matter how beat up they are. Also it will have a full roll cage going to the frame on it also. We have a ton of those running around here in South Eastern Washington. It is a right of passage to have one when you are in high school. My day it was CL5 jeeps, now Toyota pickups.

Just go buy yourself a 23 year old Ford Ranger (or S10) with 200K miles on it. It will be a lot cheaper and if you have to ask the question that is the easiest way to answer.

Son has a 2009 with around 150,000 miles on it. He's been driving a company truck for 3 years now I think. He may need to list that puppy. They are very tight for sure.

I sold my last yota with 325k miles on it....the last 125k were HARD miles, like run coyotes over type of miles. I was never forced to walk home in 20 years of ownership and I took that little thing on every inch of trail in wa and id.

The prices we see are because 30k is the new 10k......and every azzhole in the country can get financed.

I'm rolling a 12v and a 80 series cruiser now in its place and those two rigs have jumped SUBSTANTIALLY in value as well.

I think it’s the same thing you see with Tikkas on here. Some guys realize they’re solid rifles at a good price so they start sharing that info and demand increases, prices go up, and people keep hyping them. You’ll see on here some guys talking about how much of a steal tikkas were like 10 years ago when they were significantly cheaper, but there’s still a cult following for them and they’re the greatest thing ever. I think the same thing has happened to the Tacoma’s, just on a much larger scale and for longer

I've got 365k on a 2006 and I'm about to sink $4000+ into her for new/upgraded suspension and some other things. The frame was replaced by Toyota a few years ago and I intend to keep this frame clean and rust free. I've decided that even if the transmission or engine needed replaced I would do it. It's a nice truck, does what I need it to do. New trucks are effing expensive. And used ones aren't much less than new. Better to keep what I have on the road.

Over on Tacoma world the guys in rust belt go on and on about fluid film and wolly something.
I guess you paint it in the frame every fall and squirt it inside or something. To keep rust out.

I have an 02 with 365k on it as well. Just replaced the plastic door handle for the 4th time. Also will be redoing the suspension this summer, maybe I’ll put 1000$ into her but that’s all. Certainly didn’t and wouldn’t pay very much for mine but it has its place along side my F250

You have around $10k to buy a pickup...what else are you going to get that you expect will run another few years? There's your demand side of the equation...

And the market is nuts right now. I paid $30k for my 2019 Tacoma last April, KBB says current trade in value is $35k and private party $39k.

The amount of money being pumped into the economy the last few months has tons of people buying new to them used vehicles.Used vehicle prices are up $2000-$3000 more just since the beginning of 2021 on a lot of used vehicles.

Also the new vehicle production is down, so new car dealerships are getting less new vehicles. The rental car companies can’t get new vehicles, so they aren’t selling the used ones with 20-30 k miles at auction
replace with new cars.That was a major source of 1-2 year old vehicles for the used part of new car dealerships to sell.

I watched a guy buy a 2004 Toyota Tacoma at auction last week for $18700 with 146000 miles! Same guy paid $18300 for a 2005 Toyota Tundra with 109k miles!

Pretty sure we are seeing inflation on almost everything.

Wow, just did a blue book on my 2018 ram I bought a few months ago and it's 4k more than I bought it for.

In Feb 2020 I nearly bought a used 2012 Sequoia (platinum, loaded, great condition) for $16k, but then the pandemic threw in some uncertainty and I didn't. Spent the rest of the year looking for something similar, and finally in the fall after watching prices inch up and up and up pulled the trigger on a very similar Sequoia at the same price, just 4 years older.

The stimulus is killing my family's purchasing power--it is a huge net loss for us, no doubt.

The Tacoma demand is quite a phenomenon and I have never been able to figure it out. EVERYBODY loves them and you can't find one for a fair price anywhere. Why not just buy a side by side instead?

Try to buy a Land Cruiser, any year model, right now. There's a 1998 100-series for sale down the street with 250K miles, guy's asking $20k. It is built pretty nice, but that's more miles than are on my 1986 FJ60.
