What LPVO for Scout/Shorty?

So my eastern whitetail rig is a Ruger gunsite scout rifle in 450 BM. I want to move into a LPVO. I have a 3-9 accupoint right now. The 9x is nice for zeroing but I want something lower than 3X on the bottom end. The properties I hunt don’t have much shooting beyond 100 yds. I am open to both FFP and SFP as long as the reticle is usable at 1x in timber. Durability is a higher priority than glass quality for this application. I probably wont spend more than $1250 for this one. What say you? Thanks

I wouldn’t go lpvo due to small objective low light transmission.

Trijicon Credo 1-6x24 has FFP and SFP options in your price range. I have a FFP one and like it.

Slightly above your price point is the Credo 1-8. I’d like one of these myself and I’ll start looking for some holiday deals.

I have a NF NX8 1-8x24 capped with the FC-DMx reticle as well that is my favorite LVPO

You may want to keep an eye out for a Vortex Razor 1.5-8x32. They made them for a while and then discontinued them. This would probably work well for your rifle.

I put a trijicon accupoint 1-6 on my 7600 for a tracking and still-hunting whitetail gun. I dont have the experience with it to say how durable it will be in the long run, but I can say the scope is very useable, good longish eye relief and forgiving eyebox, the duplex reticle is very good against brush and busy backgrounds, and the always-on dot is pretty great. Some of the above scopes with larger objective lenses, especially the s&b, Im sure would be a touch brighter in very low light if thats a major consideration for you, but having used my accupoint on some very overcast days in very dark woods (cedar swamp), very few people will find the scope lacking in low light. I looked thru credo, huron, etc lpvo reticle options and really didnt care for the reticles—you might though. Im very happy so far with the accupoint, its the best combination of qualities Ive found for the use by a pretty wide margin.

Exactly the input I was hoping to get. Thank you for the write up. I am leaning accupoint with the reticle you have. I have the 3-9 accupoint with the post style reticle. Usable but I’m finding that I prefer the more traditional reticle. I think the 1-6 would offer a great all around option for what I’m doing.

I went from a 3-9x40 to a Primary Arms SLx 1-6x24 FFP on my 450. I went with that scope because I also have it on my 2 gun rifle, which I abuse fairly heavily and it never left me lacking performance. I hunted with it for a few weeks now and have been very happy. Still can see through the scope past legal light, so the x24mm objective diameter isn't inhibiting light transmission enough to worry about.

I'm not saying it's drop tested approved by any means. One day I thought about getting around to it but for now, shooting both of these rifles pretty often, I can see it hasn't lost zero yet.

FFP is nice with that ACSS reticle because at 1x to 2x it's really just a big red dot in the scope. Pretty fast at hitting moving and up close targets.

I have a GSR in 308 that I’ve used with several scopes relavent to this thread over the years.

Tried the: Leupold vxlll 1.75-6x32. Sold that for a vortex razor 1.5-8x32. Sold that for an older accupoint 1-4x24 with the red chevron. Now selling the rifle, but keeping the 1-4 accupoint and sticking it on a lightweight AR.

I liked the vortex better than the Leupold in all categories. The larger objective of the razor was nice and it was optically best of the 3, also one of my favorite German #4 reticles. However I’m cross eye dominant. It’s rarely an issue, but the 1.5 magnification on the low end was just enough to distort target acquisition when shouldering quickly. 1 or 2 power on the low end doesn’t cause an issue, but 1.5 specifically does. Even the vxlll 1.75-6x32 didn’t seem to be a problem, but I think it is technically a 1.9 at the low.

The accupoint 1-4 is great for how old it is and I believe it’s the lightest true 1 power lpvo available. They’re still expensive when new but you can stalk ebay for a few weeks for a decent price. Especially if the tritium is degraded. I think I paid 400 and some change.

If you get either the 1-4 or 1-6 accupoint, the reticles on the 1-6 are slightly better imo. Smaller chevron and German #4. The blacked out stadia on the 1-4 german #4 is HUGE. Only reason I got the 1-4 was I have no need to use this optic past 200yd so I didn’t need the extra magnification, price, or weight.

I personally wouldn’t use an LVPO unless you’re tracking in the snow or only hunting daylight hours with the rifle.
LVPO’s have poor light transmission, especially in thick timber as you mentioned.
If you’re open to other options, I’d give the Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56 a look.

I’ve not had issues with true 1 power lpvos in poor lighting when they’re set at 1-2 power. So at first and last light you may be forced to keep it at a low magnification. However I will admit after having tried it, the 1 power even in tight confines isn’t necessary, unless you’re frequently shooting running targets like those European boar drives in the aimpoint videos.
